Terrible Cars
This is my 2nd ssang yong, had the radius first and come 1st mot needed a lot spent on it so decided to trade in for Rexton top of the range diesel with all mod cons, had nothing but problems since purchase brand new in 2009, car had 2 recalls but parts weren't available for several months then I was involved in a non fault accident and this proved very costly as ssang yong claimed the factory had gone on strike and were unable to provide parts for our car ,with a disabled child couldn't be without a vehicle and ssang yong themselves were totally useless but eventually got a very small car from the repair centre but were unable to fit my daughters wheelchair in it, only when 5 month had past I contacted the newspapers did we see some action and they took a car apart to fix mine but when received it back we realised the alloy that was damaged was still infact damaged, they claimed it was replaced but once my insurance company got involved we were told the alloy would have to be tested as we could have done pot hole damage but it turned out it was a crack in alloy and they never admitted it wasn't replaced but shock to come they couldn't get another alloy so at last a whole new set of alloys but at my insurers expense, now the car is 7 weeks out of warranty but was off the road for 6 months due to ssang yong failing to provide parts and yes we need a new engine due to oil starvation and no oil in engine, your right ssang yong say nothing to do with them and dealer not interested as I've missed a service,my argument no warning light came on and if ssang yong had provided parts after accident then the car would have still been in warranty when engine went, cost six and a half thousand, solicitor now on to this.love rextons to drive but will never touch ssang yong again as no diesel engine should go this quickly and they want your money but no decent after sales atall and there not cheap

Hello From South Africa. We Have A Ssangyong Rexto
Hello from South Africa. We have a Ssangyong Rexton 2 and it is the BEST car we've ever owned. Very reliable and really good value for money. It has ALL the bells and whistles - more than you get in any other SUV in it's category(like Kia or Hyundai). It ranks up there with the likes of MERC and BMW SUV's. Really comfortable, tows very well and with 4x4 low range is a dream off road. We've even taken 7 people in it and gone up Sani Pass! I love it and will buy another one in a heart beat.

It Is An Excellent Car, Have Owned Two Previous Ss
It is an excellent car, have owned two previous Ssangyongs and very reliable cars. I think people who critisize it are snobs and have actually never driven one. I have owned Mercedes and other European cars and the Rexton has a similar feel. Most engine parts are European . Very happy with it, only drawback is the lack or poor marketing to improve the branding.

This Is Our Second Ssangyong Rexton, The First Re
This is our second Ssangyong Rexton, the first Rexton purchased Sept 2004 the 'new' manual 270 SE, 29 mpg towing our twin axle caravan(1750kgs) to Scotland, my Husband thought he bought a different vehicle to the Rexton that was reviewed that month and 'slated' so badly by the Caravan Club Tow Car of the Year. Then after I had broken my left ankle he changed it for a 2007 Rexton automatic 2. this tows the caravan equally as well.
Can't see the point of a vehicle in permanent four wheel drive so we have always opted for the part time version.

Message From Holland: Own A Chip-tuned Rexton For
Message from Holland: own a chip-tuned Rexton for 1,5 years, no big problems. Tow a horst-trailer, cruise the autobahn, vacation in mountains. The Mercedes-designed engine is reliable. Follow instructions on oil-change for engine and automatic gearbox. And wait for the engine and turbo to warm up (about 10 min/10 km) before rev it up. Story from the guy who blew his Rexton twice seems strange to me, especially because he does not tell us the causes of the blow-ups.

We Purchased Two Ssangyong Rexton Ii Sx In April 2
We purchased two Ssangyong Rexton II SX in April 2006 - each engine in both cars has blown up - each vehicle has been serviced every six months at an average cost of £450 - The first car was fixed within warranty by NMG motors Norfolk, but was off the road for six weeks whilst waiting for spare parts - NMG and SSangyoung did not provide a loan vehicle so we hire a vehicle which cost us over £1500. The second vehicles engine has now blown up and SSyangyoung and NMG refuse to fix it landing us with a £10,300 bill for the repair. Their argument is that the vehicle which has done 40K should have been serviced every 6000 miles or every 7 weeks weeks with our mileage at an average cost of £450
This is not what the salesman told us - he told us to service every six months, which we already thought was high and this is what we have done. The second vehicle which is now an effective right-off after 14 months is sitting at NMG - Wait for it - We received back the first vehicle with a new engine - I took it to a car wash and in the process the rear spoiler got caught, the window smashed and the spoiler damaged - the vehicle waited 4 WEEKS for a replacement rear window and is currently still with the garage for a further 3 weeks waiting for a spoiler part. Luckily this time the insurance is paying for a car.
We have pleaded to SSangyoung UK and they refuse to take responsibility for the engine blowing up. Be very careful if you are considering purchasing this vehicle - We can only regret our decision
I am having the same problem! My engine failed whilst driving on the motorway. I had my Rexton serviced at 9784 miles and again at 14392 miles. After only 29 months and 24000 miles the engine has failed. Ssangyong are wanting all sorts of proof from the 1st service done in Dec 2009 not the 2nd done Nov 2010. They want to know what oil was used and where the oil filter was perchaced as well as the model number, why? these were all replaced at the 2nd service. I feel Ssangyong just don't want to honnor waranties esp when it is a major problem. Be aware of the Ssangyong after service!!!!
Your owner service manual do stated clearly on the Engine Oil change interval and the driving condition that may reduced the interval. It is rather surprising for one who drive 6,000 miles in 7 week (850 miles per week) not knowing the change interval and to rely on a Salesman word entirely. Having driven 40k miles (6.5X more than the recommended interval), I would be surprised the engine did not blow up earlier.
If NMG is representing the dealer, it won't helps anyone by just repeating that it is not wholly truth but not sharing the other side of the story.
I think you have had a runaway diesel engine, when the turbo seals go and the engine combusts on its own oil
Diesel engines produce more soot than petrol engines and this contaminates the oil and thickens it up. If this contaminated oil is not changed then the soot either sludges out of suspension or the oil gets thicker.Sludging out of suspension and sitting in the bottom of the sump may make the oil level appear adequate on a dipstick check.Thickening of the oil can cause other severe problems.Turbo diesels generate extremely high combustion temperatures, addressed by oil sprays to cool the pistons. Oil contaminated and thickened with soot has a greatly diminished effectiveness in doing the necessary cooling, leading to piston seizure. The need to change the oil on modern diesels regularly is more important with petrol engines.Long distance trucks with more sophisticated filtering systems use longer oil drains.
I ordered a Rexton II with XDI 270 diesel engine and await for delivery early March 2008. Your review intimidate me very much. Please kindly advise the exact problem of the blown up enigne that you had. We had quite a few Rexton here but owners are quite happy about the quality, parts supply, even though we are paying high import tax that brings the invoice of US$ 60,000 and without any warranty and service from Ssangyong JV in Vietnam (who is selling solely Musso, a very tough SUV that I used for 4 years in my half-year 0,2-0,5 meter flooded roads in the Mekong delta and am still quite happy about its engine, except for the turbo that broke down at 125k km mileage).
