The Techniche "deluxe Cooling Sport Vest" Is A Wor
The Techniche "deluxe cooling sport vest" is a worthy, and quite amazing addition to any rider's gear.
For many years I've ridden around these blistering hot California roads, enduring crushing heat that left me wondering how I managed to avoid heat stroke, and coming home after long summer rides completely heat exhausted.
Every rider knows he should wear protective clothing when riding. It makes sense. You don't dress for the ride, you dress for the fall...as they say. The problem is, summer heat causes us to start thinking about either not riding during the hot afternoon, or trading off valuable protection.
A cooling vest answers that problem perfectly. The cooling vest offered by Techniche fills the bill by coming in at a price anyone can afford.
It starts out light...a quilted fabric vest, full zippered front, with raised collar that closed by "hook and loop" (Velcro for the rest of us), and stretchable side panels to ensure a snug fit over a T-shirt. It is designed to fit close to the body, and works by the process of evaporative cooling. Basically, the vest is soaked in water to allow the polymer granules imbedded within the quilted fabric to absorb copious amounts. The vest "bloats up" to several pounds as it takes on water, and can be placed in a refrigerator prior to use for added "coldness", though I've found this is completely unnecessary.
After soaking, blot it to remove excess surface water and don. It feels pretty cool initially, but not uncomfortable. Then put on your favorite aeromesh riding jacket and go!
The vest's cooling effect lasts for hours and it WORKS.
Gone is the sensation of being roasted alive out in the direct heat of a baking 100 degree + sun. When sitting stopped at intersections I noted a complete lack of any sensation of my shoulders and neck becoming hot...both remained nice and cool. Riding at speed, the effect is magnified...the entire torso, shoulders and neck feels "cool", and this cooler core temperature transfers to the extremities and head. Wearing the cooling vest, mesh jacket, jeans, boots, and full face helmet, I found it EASY and comfortable to ride many hours in complete comfort.
The vest "gives up" water by evaporation, and starts to lose effectiveness after about 5 hours, but can be easily "renewed" on the road by re-soaking, either in a sink, or from bottled water.
Returning home after a short, five hour jaunt during the hottest part of a 100 degree day, I stepped off my bike with none of the previous sensation of being only moments away from collapse from heat exhaustion.
Cooling vests really DO work, and the Techniche version is priced so anyone can afford it, and no longer have to leave their protective clothing at home.
I ordered mine from www.tuffrhino.com for a measly $39 and it's worth MORE than every penny! If you ride a motorcycle in HOT weather, this is a MUST HAVE!
By the way, it also works equally well for working outdoors in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day!
I found this review helpful because...it was thoughtful, detailed, and well written and addressed all the questions I had about the effectiveness of the Technique cooling vest. I just purchased one based on this review for riding my bicycle in the blistering California summer heat. Have yet to try it out, but just wearing it around my house I am noticing marked cooling. This thing is pretty amazing.
