If you are new to the game. All I can say is take your time...and I mean months/years not days/weeks. Rushing in head first will only cost you money.

But just because possibly 80% of the bets one can place will fail, being able to pick the 20% doesn't equate impossible no?

I've stumbled across the spread-betting.com website around a year or so ago and I found it very useful to learn the basics of how spread betting providers work - the website is full of trading strategies and reviews the different spread betting company and it also has a number of frequently asked questions about spread betting. It is simple but it is handy and very easy to navigate. And importantly (!) it tells you straightaway to start small and sensibly!
