I wished to send an inheritance to my nephew in Hawaii. Checking prices and service levels, Transferwise.com looked best for charges and speed, so I took the plunge. Sending money around the world is not an everyday event for me, so I was concerned that things might go awry. I had a rummage through Martin Lewis's MoneySavingExpert to find a cheaper way to transfer money to European accounts. TransferWise were in the list and had been recommended by a friend. I'd looked at my current account offering but the mainstream high street banks don't offer a particularly cheap service here. Foreign exchange is a gift to the industry as it tends to confuse many consumers who find it hard to extract the charges/cost from the spreads.

I found it easy to sign up on the TransferWise site and make my first transfer. The website seems well designed and easy to use. I've used them a few times since and had same experience.

TransferWise is in the "authorised" category of FCA regulation which is higher grade than the "regulated" category. FCA list all this on their site.

The handling and professionalism using this so called company, is laughable. My last and final transfer was a disgrace, and a nightmare. I contacted my bank and had an investigation started. Still awaiting return of a transfer and endless delays,and a new story each time.

Will never use this again. It was promised transferred in 2 days yet 5 days later it was not completed, and a due payment was missed, and opportunity lost- credit rating also dented due to late payment.

Long story short, do not go near this company unless you are able to burn money, time, and enjoy stress. Never never never again. My bank will recover the funds.

Not worth the hassle at all.

PS. The company puts a lot of effort in preserving an online positive image. Whether they have a team of hired students to write 1 line positive reviews etc. I can not say, but I suspect this PR effort is doing its best to cover up what a sham company this is. AVOID like the plague if you like your time and money.

I had to send my tuition fees for a course in new zealand and was a bit reluctant at first to use transferwise. Initially I wanted to send the fees by transfermate but decided to use transferwise after some research. I'm so glad that I did. Arrived at my university's bank account on time (I think it was even one day sooner than what they claimed). Creating an account on their website was so simple and they did not ask for any ID, even though that I'm not registered on the electoral roll (but possibly because I have a good credit score and a good history at experian and equifax). I did some research on TransferWise to assure myself that it was legitimate. I found quite a few articles from major print newspapers about the company so I was reassured. I compared their rates to USForex, Xoom, and XE, since those are available in the US. TransferWise beat their rates, and since they have a referral service, I used a link I found to get my first transaction up to $4500 for no fee. I sent dollars to Norway. The money got there with a direct bank transfer in 4 days (You put your bank info in on the site as well as the recipient's) at the rate shown on the site when I initiated the transaction even though the kroner had gained on the dollar in the meantime. I was very happy about this as I was concerned that I would owe my tour guide if the rate went down. The process was simple and the site easy to use. Since you are sidestepping the banks completely, it makes for a much cheaper currency exchange. It looks like your money gets transferred more quickly if you're sending from one European country to another. I'm very dissatisfied. I wanted to send the payment via direct debit, but apparently you can't send direct debits to Transferwise from Bank of America (which is a bit ridiculous, what with Bank of America being so ubiquitous). So I had to pay $3 to make a transfer from BoA, which would take 3 days. It wasn't made clear to me that I wouldn't be getting the rate available at the time I set up the payment, but would get the rate at the time my money arrived. If this had been made clear to me, since I'm very risk averse, I never would have made the transfer. For example, on the right hand side of this very screen it says "Amount: 2,000.93 GPB" which is not what you'd give me if the money arrived right now - this is deeply misleading and I do feel I have been deceived by Transferwise. I'm a poor student and although this debacle has only cost me $6, I wasted a lot of time calling my bank and calling Transferwise, and I'm very frugal so $6 is really non-trivial to me, when I'm using this service in the first place to save every penny. I will not be recommending Transferwise to my friends - quite the contrary.
