I just have to write to warn people who may be thinking of doing sociology or social policy at Newcastle. Don't.
I'm in my second year and wish I had gone elsewhere. Why? The best staff have all left in the time I have been there and not been replaced. There is strong anti heterosexual thing going on with women lecturers who will cultivate a few favourites but don't want to here other views. The dept is now very small and the staff are not interested in students - well there is never anyone there!
Also there won't be any social policy degrees which is right as no one is interested in teaching it. Much of the teaching is done by well meaning post grads but they really can't teach!
The only good thing is that standards are so low it can't I hope be that hard to get a 2.1. My brother is at LSE - sociology - where he has far better courses and actually knows some social theory
Sorry about the rant but you should know this!
Sounds like an all too familiar tale I am afraid - the way you describe your experience sounds like so many HE establishments. Maybe your experience is actually average rather than poor - but simply because the quality overall is so dismal!
Hope you get/got your degree - and remember that the vast majority of learning at uni occurs through your own research and reading. The quality of teaching is only one part - show them what you are capable despite their poor support!
