I really don't know how many bikes I've owned over the last 40 years. Dawes, Saracens, Carreras, Claud Butler, Raleigh, & Lord alone knows what else. Over the last few years, been buying one through the 'Ride To Work' scheme every couple of years. Started with a full on road bike, quick, but puncture prone on my commute. Next up, a cross country bike with tele forks, great fun, but heavy. Then I went for the Boardman hybrid. It looks & goes great! Even with a carrier & panniers loaded with shopping, handles nimbly. Even tackles gentle off roading. I've had it for 4 years now, commuted, toured & shopped with it. Best bike I've ever had - which is why my various others are in the shed.
