“tutoring and mock”

★★★★★

written by Higginsfh296 on 17/10/2014

We had John as tutor for our son who has just passed the 11plus.First of all I must say they were honest in saying children who do better, are the ones whose parents are actively involved! We took this advice seriously and it payed off! We found the the whole tutoring process brilliant, the gentle introduction into the exam style, all the work covered, the mocks were a great way to get my son to know how to manage himself on the day of the actual exam! Our son found the summer classes very interesting, he never complained when he had to go because it was not only work but fun as well! Our son thought John was brilliant at explaining maths and I must say his teachers were amazed by the progress he made last year (he moved up 5 sub levels) and it showed in the real exam even though he complained it was hard. Last but not the least, communication was brilliant, at times I felt John even slept with the computer on his lap, as soon as you sent an email, your reply was already there! One little negative thing:there were some mistakes in the answers at times but I was very pleased to notice that our son spotted some of them. We thought, they tried to do a lot last academic year and could not put up with the workload at a certain point. Overall brilliant, will recommend to any parent but it is fundamental to follow up your child and make sure they do their work. That is the challenging bit. Thank you Jan and John and well done.

“Mock exams; realistic with comprehensive feedback”

★★★★★

written by on 23/10/2013

My son took one mock exam with Jan Stringer, and two with another local 11+ coach. The split between two providers was due to us needing to find suitable times for our son to do the exams and to ensure our son was put in an unfamiliar situation with people he didn't know, just as he would be on the day. He already knew Jan Stringer, having had some coaching from her (also of very good quality). Having paid for comparable levels of exam feedback from both providers (there are different levels available at different cost from both providers), I recommend Jan Stringer's offering above the alternative. Jan's feedback told us what percentage of children had got each question correct (showing us if our son was losing points on something that should have been easy). Crucially, where answers were incorrect, we were given the full question text for those questions which most children had got correct. e.g. our son had a question wrong which 74% of children sitting that exam had got correct, so you expect him to also give a correct answer. We could then look at that question with our son and see if he didn't read it properly/doesn't understand it/doesn't have the knowledge to answer it. This was the most useful part of the report given to us and wasn't provided by the other mock exam provider. We have been so impressed, that when our nest child comes to sit the exam, we'll be doing more than one mock with Jan.

“mock exams”

★★★★★

written by on 20/06/2013

My two children took a set of exams with the stringers and are now in years 8 and 10 at Bishops. the exams were at the standard or more difficult than the 11+ and as such were a unique way to see if your child was fast and clever enough and could concentrate for the duration of all of the exams to do the real thing. We also found the analysis very useful of which questions has goen wrong and why. We will be booking the exams again for our next child in 2014.

“11+ Mock Exam”

★★★★★

written by frumps on 23/10/2012

Jan Stringer's 11+ Mock Exams have been a great experience for two of my children. They offer a realistic dry run to the real 11+ with an exam agenda the same as the real day and test papers that contain the same question types and difficulty as the GL Assessment Papers.

“Mock Exam August 2012”

★★★★★

written by d_a_brown on 28/09/2012

The mock exam was an incredibly useful tool, particularly as we undertook the D_I_Y (as opposed to tutor) route to the 11+. It gave my daughter a new confidence and now, having sat the 11+, my daughter reports that it was very similar in standard to the actual exam and overall very representative. As far as we were concerned, it was a very useful benchmark against other 11+ candidates. I was hugely impressed by the detailed reports, which highlights particular question areas where there is a weakness and provides further examples. The observation reports were also interesting. I would recommend that the whole package is taken - it is such, such good value. The Stringer team work hard to get it right and I believe they have succeeded.

“11+ mock exams”

★★★★☆

written by Niki68 on 22/09/2012

My daughter sat 2 mock exams prior to the 11+ at South Wilts. It was an ideal opportunity for her to learn about exam techniques, timings and also to make those silly mistakes that you make only once. When she sat the proper exam, she sais she felt much calm and less daunted and that she often thought she was just in another mock ! It held no surprises for her. we got a detailed report with the first exam which highlighted several areas to work on. The simple report which came with her second exam still propvided plenty of information. we had a query about one of the papers and the Stringers rapidly responded and explained the situation fully. Would recommend this to anyone who is planning to have their children sit exams of this kind. Well worth it.

“Excellent mock exam experience”

★★★★★

written by chocolatebanana on 04/03/2012

Invaluable experience for both the practicalities of exam conditions (timing and what to do) and type of questions to expect. My daughter sat two mock exams and when she came to the real exam felt much more confident and familiar with what was expected. I found the detailed report very useful and correlated with my daughter's own report on her exam experience. It was useful for me to know how she reacted during the mock.

“You helped my son so much”

★★★★★

written by sean.watson63 on 04/03/2012

Both of my children went to all three of the 11+ mock exams and they found them very helpful, informative, and it trained them for exam conditions. We also found when our children took the mock exam, it helped enormously with confidence building for when they entered the final exam. I would definitely recommend it to a friend.

“Would most definitely recommend these mock exams for...”

★★★★★

written by on 21/12/2011

Would most definitely recommend these mock exams for any child working towards the 11+. They gave my son a taste of what the exams would be like. We found the detailed reports really useful in helping him focus on questions that he was less secure on and they were also a real confidence booster for him, showing him which areas he had done well in. It's a tricky time helping a child prepare for the 11+ exams and we (my son, and us, his parents) found these mocks invaluable.

“An excellent introduction to 11+ examinations”

★★★★★

written by on 02/12/2011

We are so thankful that we were lucky enough to find the Stringers. Our son sat 3 Mock examinations and we found that very necessary, as the first mock showed that he was not use to sitting and concentrating for the required length of time. By the time he took the third mock he was much more comfortable with the routine and knew what to expect, hence his results improved. We valued the well presented and concise results from each mock exam as it showed clearly the knowledge areas that our son needed help in developing. The result of this exercise was that by the time our son took the actual 11+ examination he was far more confident than would otherwise have been. On exiting the examination room he proudly declared, "It was just like being at Mrs. Stringers!" We would certainly recommend the Stringers excellent service and value for money to everyone with children about to enter the 11+ examinations.

“Reviews of 2010 Mock Exams sent to Jan Stringer”

★★★★★

written by jls483 on 02/12/2011

Here are the reviews we received for our 2010 exams (before we knew about reviewcentre.com). You should of course bear in mind that we are unlikely to be sent unflattering reviews, but on the other hand most people had something nice to say. We still think they have some useful information for potential customers: The mock exams helped my daughter a lot, she was very nervous on the 3 mocks she took with you, but on the day she seemed nerve free! The reports were very good and gave a clear understanding of my childs ability in each area, the mocks were also a good guide as to how well she would do in the real thing. The setting, the room, the examiners, the time required, the papers and the feed back are all excellent and were a much needed confidence boost for my daughter. Well done and thank you. I will be, and I have recommended the mock exams to my friends for their children. My daughter's score increased with each exam (she took the 2nd and 3rd) and it was enough that she passed outright her actual 11+ and got a place at the grammar school despite being a long way outside the catchment area. My son found the exam a really valuable experience, and it gave him confidence for the real thing. We found the reports very insightful, and it was particularly reassuring to have the comments on how he'd coped with the actual exam situation. The samples of wrongly answered questions were useful, as they helped us to focus our revision during those last few weeks. I think this is an invaluable service prior to taking the real exams. We only ever intended to sit one mock, but my son decided for himself he wanted to do the others, and gradually increased in confidence and success. He feels he would not have passed on the day without having had the experience of the mocks. Very useful and comprehensive report. I am quite convinced that sitting the mock exams gave my daughter the confidence to believe in her ability. The mock tests were invaluable - not only for the content, but for the boys to appreciate how it feels to be one of many in a room and the sensation of test conditions. The twins have both said they were really pleased to take the mocks, and said it would have been doubly scary if they hadn't! Thank you for all your support. I was very pleased I had booked my son in for the practice exam before he sat the 11+ examination. It was a valuable experience for him and provided very useful feedback as to which areas to work on before he took the exam. The detailed report was definitely worth paying extra for. The morning was well organised and the results were swiftly and efficiently sent back to me. My daughter loved sitting the mock and experiencing the feel of an exam in a larger classroom setting. There are only 12 children in her class. It gave us an idea of the areas we needed to give her extra support . Thank you. We found the mock exams provided by Jan and John Stringer incredibly helpful. The organisation was very efficient and the whole experience was a very positive one. Our son benefitted enormously from the experience and I would not hesitate in recommending the service to anyone who is serious about sitting and passing the 11+. I would highly recommend pupils sit at least one mock exam - they need to know what to expect on the day if they are to give their full attention to the actual tests. These mock exams and the feedback reports were extremely helpful. I can fully recommend the services provided by John Stringer and his team - I found them invaluable in the lead up to the actual examination, providing an excellent example for my child of what it would be like on the actual exam day e.g questions and timings. After each examination of which we chose to do all three, we were then able to look at any problems we encountered at each and hopefully correct for the next exam. I would particularly recommend the extra feedback report in light of my last comment. Excellent opportunity to experience mock versions of the real thing. All my four children found your sessions very helpful in preparing them for the proper thing and gave them an idea of how to pace themselves, and what it was like having to take all three papers and complete the piece of free writing in one go. Highly recommended by the family!

“The best preparation possible for the 11+”

★★★★★

written by on 02/12/2011

I cannot recommend these mock exams more highly. I did all three for my children, 1 in 2009 and the other in 2011. I ordered the detailed reports in all cases, and this was worth the extra. The price is reasonable, and much cheaper than an alternative mock exam that is available in the Salisbury area. The three main benefits for us were: - The best preparation for the real exam, with other children, in an unknown room, with exam conditions and timings. One of my children is very anxious and this gradually wore off as he sat each mock. By the real thing he was simply 'excited', no anxiety at all. - You get a realistic assessment of where you child is compared to peers. Child just taken it is 'average', passed 1 mock and failed 2. We now have realistic expectations, which we could not work out from school reports or home 11+ tests. He is also aware of this and is prepared for either outcome... - With the detailed report you get a list of questions (and answers) marked wrong. It helped us focus on things to help them with in the final weeks. Highly recommended.

“Of limited value detailed report could was a waste of...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 29/11/2011

My child sat a mock exam at a school in Woodford, just north of Salisbury. The experience of sitting the mock under exam conditions was the only real benefit of this exercise. We opted for an additional 'detailed' report about the performance of our child and this took ages to arrive. When it eventually did, it could almost have been about anyone. In addition I was told via another parent whose child sat the mock, that they had received instruction from Mr Stringer that a mistake had been made and one of the paper set was too difficult and additional 5 marks should be added to all scores. What's the point?

Jls483's Comment

The are a number of reports included within the detailed reports package. The most personal is the observation report where we describe how focused the child was during the exam, how quickly they worked, whether they did not fill the boxes in very clearly or anything else we can deduce from the paper. If a child is a model candidate then sometimes there is not much to say. If that is the case we don't make things up to give value for money.

We include other reports showing details of how the candidates answered every question and a selection of questions that the child got wrong. Most people seem very satisfied with what they received for £20. About 71% of those who had detailed reports for ME1 ordered them for ME2. I wonder if this parent is missing some reports.

We do aim to get the basic reports out in about 36 hours and all of the detailed reports out within 5 days. I think this is pretty quick. Sadly due to the death of my father-in-law, my wife was away and so I was doing all the child care and unable to work as quickly as normal - some detailed reports took almost 10 days to send. Most people were very understanding and grateful we managed to run the exams at all.

We update the exams each year to make them as realistic as possible. There is of course a risk involved in that you can make mistakes or that you make the paper too easy or too hard. This happened on one of our Maths papers that turned out to be too hard. We informed all parents of this so that they didn't panic about the scores being so low. You could argue that there is no harm in the children experiencing a paper that was not quite what they expected so that they learn to cope with it. We have heard that this year's Verbal paper was much harder than people were expecting.

If this reviewer wants to get in touch, we'd be delighted to give him a refund of £10. We'll also consider offering a moneyback guarantee as standard for next year.

“11+ Mock Exam Jan Stringer”

★★★★★

written by MRendell on 28/11/2011

My daughter did 2 of the 3 mock exams that Jan offerred. The 1st one I paid for the detailed report which although expensive I found extremely helpful as it told me about her concentration and how fast/slow she was getting on whether she became distracted, whether she looked nervous etc things I could discuss with my daughter and try to help her with. It also really helped her in understanding what would happen on the day and get used to sitting and concentrating for that amount of time. I would definately recommend doing them.

“11+mock exams”

★★★★★

written by K.M.Higson on 23/11/2011

Both my children have prepared for the 11+ ,in 2009 and 2011.They had one to one tuition which was excellent but of course gave you little idea how they performed in comparison with their peers.I heard about Jan Stringer's mock exams from a friend and entered my daughter for only one.She really benefitted from the experience-she'd never had to sit still for so long under exam conditions. The exam was marked quickly -we ordered the detailed report and it was helpful. This year I entered my son for the first two-I think they were even better -he almost enjoyed them!!-again practice under exam conditions is so important. The detailed reports were even more detailed this year -he now knows not to be too busy minding everyone else's business!-his attitude was much more focussed in the second exam. The results were emailed very promptly and your child's performance is clearly compared to other candidates. You are given the questions(&answers!!)that your child got wrong so that you can go through them at home.Certainly in 2009, the questions were comparable to those in the real test. There are lots of helpful sugggestions too.The exams are run in a very organized and professional manner-Jan and John respond to any queries pre- and post-exam very quickly.I would definitely recommend the mock exams-I would suggest ordering the detailed reports certainly for the first exam and the last so you can gauge your child's progress.Don't be put off by the price(not excessive when you consider the amount of work put in by Jan and John)-they really are excellent value.I've no more children to put through the 11+ process but if I had I'd book them in ASAP for the mocks.
