High Maintenance But Adorable Pet
Sugar Gliders are really adorable, however they have very specific care requirements -they need a 2:1 Ca:P ratio in their diet, and a lot of room to run around and play, as well as lots of human interaction, and temperatures above 20 degrees celcius.
If you get an untame sugar glider I have heard they are known as "fluffy cobras" and given the size of their teeth, this is not something I'd want to be on the wrong end of.
On the plus side they can become "bonded" to their owners, and so can become incredibly friendly. However if you're not willing to spend a LOT of time and effort looking after them they are not the pet for you.

The Sugar Glider, also called the Flying Sugar, is a small gliding possum, native to eastern and northern mainland Australia, New Guinea, and recently Tasmania.
The Sugar Glider is around 16 to 20cm long, with a tail almost as long as the body. It weighs between 90g - 150g. The fur is grey, with black and cream patches at the base of its grey ears, and its mouth is short and rounded.
The Sugar Glider can occupy any area where there are hollow trees for shelter and sufficient food. Its natural diet is sap of acacias and certain Eucalyptus trees, nectar, pollen, and arthropods.
The Sugar Glider is protected by law in Australia, where it is illegal to keep them as pets, or to capture or sell them without a licence. Where legal, the Sugar Glider is not difficult to breed in captivity under the right conditions. In the United States, keeping Sugar Gliders as pets is illegal in some states, including California, Georgia and Hawaii, with many other states requiring a permit. The Sugar Glider is a popular pet because of its lively and abnormal nature, and when given plenty of attention, it bonds well to human companions. The Sugar Glider is a fun, active animal, that brought much pleasure to me when I first saw one on a recent holiday to Australia, and I had serious thoughts about buying one back in the UK, but I thought it would be unfair to take it out of its natural home.
What charming creatures these Gugar Gliders are! I think they require more specialist care than I could provide for them though! Great review.
I was curious, as I had never heard of Sugar Glider's! I would always do research before taking on any pet, having taken on so many over the years, that people either get tired of or can no longer keep. Lizards, cats, dogs, fish, scorpions, a tarantula, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, gerbils, chickens, budgies, a canary... but never a Sugar Glider!
Helen, Sugar Glider's are quite difficult to find, but there are a few breeders dotted around the country. After some looking I have found a breeder in Devon at www.preloved.co.uk/fuseaction-adverts.showadvert/index-1031104282/1d642475.
If you are interested in getting one, I advise you to research the animal and make sure you have the appropriate living conditions for it (a taller cage is better - at least 3 feet high).
