Great Dog. Needs Space To Be Let Off The Lead And

Great dog. Needs space to be let off the lead and run freely but he is also happy to sleep in his blanket! He does have a tendency to try to steal food from the table but this can be quite funny. If you're getting one prepare to spend a lot of time with him curled up next to you.

Only down side is that mine sometimes runs toward other dogs very fast when he sees them. This is not done in an aggressive way but can be quite intimidating for them!

I Never Thought I'd Have A Whippet As A Breed. He

I never thought I'd have a whippet as a breed. He came to me after being dumped where I worked, I took him home for a weekend 19 months ago. My opinions of whippets have totally changed I am completely hooked on them! He has a superb temperament, he is loving, playful and fine at being left alone. They do not need huge amounts of exercise just a run around a decent sized park every day. They do feel the cold so coats are a must in the winter and they generally hate water. I do let mine off the lead and he is fine, many breeders will say you must not because they are sight hounds. He loves everyone young and old, he lives happily with 3 cats!I don't think they make great guard dogs!If I am truly honest I cannot fault this breed except the thieving of food! (and in our Jimmy's case blister pack tablets!) I am a veterinary nurse and have to be very careful if someone asks to recommend a breed I now always advise a whippet especially in a family as they are not huge dogs like the ever popular labs and retrievers (lovely though they are they can take up a lot of space)

I found this review very helpful because I have a whippet myself. We got him as a puppy of 8 weeks and he is now 2 1/2 . we cal him Tim and he is exactly as Becky's dog. In our married life (48 years in august!!) we have had a 2 Welsh Terriers, quite good but when the children came along we had labradors, had golden and later a lovely black one. Now we are getting older we decided we would not have any more dogs after our last dog died. But it was horrible not to have a dog!!! Our youngest son who has 2 dogs advised us to get a whippet, exactly for the reason's Becky mentioned. Thus puppy Tim came to us and he is the most loving and easy dog we have ever had. He had adapted to our lives, not being able to give him long walks he is happy to rin around the large garden, has a pretty long walk once a week, loves sleeping under a blanket or tries to cuddle in between us under the duvet!
