Dachshund

They are just fantastic dogs to be around - we have already found a companion for him (she is only 3 weeks old so won't have her for another 5 weeks yet). The most important thing to remember, as with any small dog, is to be their pack leader - get this right from the start and you will have no trouble with chewing, persistent barking or their desire to sleep in your bed; set ground rules early and you will enjoy a long and happy loving relationship.

I have a three year old male Dachshund, mini smooth coat - love love love him. I've had many dogs (yorkies) and I won't go back. But I've heard a lot of people tell me their dachshund barks all the time. I trained mine not to bark. It can be done! But you have to nip that in the butt the first week and be consistent. Also, I've heard a lot of people say their dachshund is overly protective and nips at strangers. I can certainly see that tendency in mine. He'd sooner lick you than bite you, but he does exhibit some protective behaviour - whining when he doesn't have my attention - and that can lead to problems later. Hope this helps!

My vet once said he believes some dachshunds have the intelligence of a three year old child, and an adult doxie will find a way to communicate his wants and needs to you. I assure you it is incredible to see. These dogs are not like labs, where they are easily trained and happy to remain in the background. They are serious companions and a single pet needs lots of human attention and will bond very closely with its owners. Many people have more than one (which also shows peoples fierce devotion to the breed). Most doxies INSIST on sleeping with their owners (and they will burrow under the covers, very cute).

I love Dachshunds to pieces, they're the best dogs ever! I own a mini smooth and she's the best dog in the universe, i love more than any thing.
