Plastic or polypropeline bowls retain old food smells in the scratches. This can put cats off their food.Or you might find they paw the food out onto the floor.Polypropeline plastic bowls promote bacterial growth and old food smells.I have used scratch resistant melamine.Melamine will not dent like stainless or break like ceramic. Melamine is great for the out doors/ car etc You can even get anti slip melamine if you search around.
