So Here Is The Story Of How I Came To Buy A Mattre
So here is the story of how I came to buy a mattress over the Internet without ever trying it.
1 - Had been using futons for years and my back problems getting worse
2 - Decided to shop for the best, healthiest material for my wife and I to sleep on (pretending price was no object)
3 - Never been much of an innerspring guy so decided to check out other options (foam, air, latex)
4 - Did a bunch of research and found out that memory foam is universally recommended as the most comfortable and supportive sleep for your back (except for the chemicals)
5 - Decided to road test Tempurpedic mattress, and a few others at my local Sleep Train
6 - Tried out the Tempurpedic Rhapsody and was very impressed with the comfort
7 - Did a bunch more research and found out that while many people were very happy with the Tempurpedic, many more were very unhappy due mostly to several reasons - Off-gassing (the smell) and sleeping hot. Caveat Emptor!
8 - Discovered Essentia's web site www.myessentia.com and the Tempurpedic v. Essentia Comparison page
9 - Read a bunch more of the articles from the excellent Learning Center on Essentia's site and was very impressed with the amount of information and the transparency
10 - Was very skeptical about buying a mattress without ever trying it (no showroom in my area) so placed a call to Essentia USA.
11 - Pestered staff with a bunch of questions and they handled them all with a bounty of knowledge, enthusiasm, grace, and humor
12 - Talked to my wife and had to make a decision - We believed what we read that Essentia is the only natural memory foam mattresses on the market, that they are green, clean and healthy BUT will this be as comfortable as the Tempurpedic and how do I pick the Essentia that will most likely match the Rhapsody in firmness and comfort?
13 - Looked at the Essentia mattress collection a few more times and decided that the Energie Opus seemed to be the right choice based on the firmness rating and description
14 - Talked to staff a few more times, took a deep breath, and pulled the trigger
15 - Luckily was moving into our new house so too busy to notice the wait
16 - Got the mattress, opened it up (no smell - NONE) put it together, put some sheets on and gave it a whirl!
So how did we do? We both looked at each other and cracked a big grin because not only did this mattress match exactly our expectation of what we remembered the Rhapsody to feel like, it may have been even more comfortable! Now three weeks later, I can say that I have never slept better in my life.
I was a bit hot at first and thought it was the mattress until I realized I am sleeping in a new house with a brand new HVAC furnace (very efficient) with the vent right over my head. It's not the bed. My back had been very sore from packing, moving, unpacking, not exercising, etc. The only difference in the last few weeks that I am sleeping on a brand new Essentia Energie Opus. Slowly but surely, every day my back is a little less sore.
Though it was definitely very weird to buy a mattress without trying it, I can say it was one of the best decisions I have made. Our sleep and health are very important to us. Essentia is the real deal.
OUR STORY EXACTLY! HAHA!! But, Saturday we decided to drive to NYC to try it out from DC. WE were also going to get the Rhapsody last Saturday night but had the exact reservations you had. So we purchased the Energy Opis on Saturday in NYC and now we wait! Glad you love it! We are desperate to get it!
Great write up! My girlfriend and I have recently been searching for a mattress as well. We are currently sleeping on a 30 year old coil spring which has become very uncomfortable. We have only recently considered a memory foam type mattress. We have tested most major brands and types and can never see eye to eye on one, till now.
My parents purchased a new memory foam mattress and have moved their old memory foam to the guest bed room. It is way more comfortable than our current bed. We also have some friends, that we stay with, that have a new S&F pillow top mattress for us to crash on when we visit. We find it comfortable as well but, find the pillow top masks the true support of the bed.
I am not 100% against coil spring beds I find some of them very comfortable but, have seen and heard about a lot of people having major issues and problems with coil springs (ie. sagging over time). I like to do my research before buying anything these days and have noticed that there is a way higher satisfaction level right from the beginning and threw the years with people that have bought memory foam mattresses. So we have decided to spend a little bit more money and invest in a memory foam mattress, that will support the two of us a lot more comfortably over the years than a coil spring.
While doing our research of memory foam mattresses we did come across some of the down falls of most memory foam manufactures..... which is the off gassing of the various chemicals used in the memory foams and the heat dissipation problems. My girlfriend and I like to keep everything around us as natural as possible well...Organic food, bio-degradable soaps/detergents, cosmetics/body cleansers and hair products that are petroleum free. So when we stumbled upon Essentia mattresses it was just about a no brainer what type of mattress we wanted to get.
We are lucky enough to have recently had Essentia open up a outlet store 3 blocks from our house. Last night we were out for a nice Friday night dinner and after words happen to walk buy the store and decided to go in and check them out. I spent at least 10 minutes on each mattress and was blown away buy there comfort and support. They exceeded my expectations. Plus the pillows are to die for. I asked my lady to get me the comfort pillow for my birthday which is coming up. Normally we have our differences when having to come to a conclusion on major purchases but, we both agreed, with out question, on how worth while the purchase of a Essentia mattress is.
We have narrowed down to two mattresses the Classic 8 and the Dormeuse. She likes the Classic 8 because it is a bit more cushy and I like the Dormeuse because it is a bit firmer....but not to firm. I know if I had ordered either of these mattresses of line without ever trying them I would be more than satisfied. There is a about a $1500.00 price difference though. Classic 8 $2500.00 CDN and the Dormeuse $4100.00 CDN. If you have a bad back, neck, hips spend the money and get the money and get the Dormeuse. We are a young couple in our 30's and fairly fit and if we can fit it into our budget we are going to get the Dormeuse. If not we will get the classic 8 and swap it out for a King Dormeuse when we have kids.

I found this review very helpful because...the reviewer included important details and presented the whole process he went through - step by step. He mentioned that he didn't care for innerspring mattresses, that he preferred a futon, etc. so it was easier to understand where he was coming from. If I end up buying this mattress, I'll have to buy it sight unseen as well. The way the reviewer talks about his experience makes it a lot easier for me to consider buying a mattress over the internet as a viable option (especially since I'm so taken with the "green" angle and the prospect of having NO SMELL emanating from the mattress).

It Took Forever To Arrive!!! Even Though They Warn
It took forever to arrive!!! Even though they warned me it could take 2-4 weeks to arrive, it was a long 26 days.The Energie Opus was well worth the wait. I tried a few other brands in stores but ended up ordering from Essentia's website after a quick chat with them.The comfort is definitely there. Soft..deep comfort. I think it improved my posture. :-)Very impressed with the mattress. I'd recommend it in a heat beat.

I Was Just Too Hot With The Tempur-pedic Mattress.
I was just too hot with the Tempur-Pedic mattress. It's a big artificial foam block. Great support but feels horrible. Essentia foam is water based and breathable. Very pleasant sleep.
All my friends were preaching about Tempur...now they all want an Essentia Memory Foam mattress.
