If You Want To Know Why Some Of The Best Wines Are
If you want to know why some of the best wines are coming from Marlborough region of New Zealand, Villa Maria holds the answer. The Sauvignon Blanc is bursting with fruity flavours whilst giving a fresh dry after taste. It also has a delicate zing from the Gooseberries whilst keeping its grassy roots. This is a great wine to be served extra chilled with Fish dishes in particular Salmon. Like all white wines however it will go well with all white meats and serve well on its own on a warm summer evening. Highly recommended!
Totally agree, Villa Maria is a great example of a crisp, steely and fruity Marlborough Sauvignon. Worth a bit more than your other new world Chardonnays because it's just a bit cleaner, sharper, fresher. No oak undertones or vanilla mush required to bring a great taste to the mouth, just clean notes and a long finish. Very nice. By no means alone, just a pretty good example of the region. You can go mad and pay 20 quid for Cloudy Bay - doubtlessly one of the leaders from this region, or you can hunt out a decent 8-9 pound example, for example Craggy Hill, Old Coach Road or my own favourite the Gladstone offering, which is brilliant. NZ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is well worth its reputation. However, if you are hell-bent on a top notch Sauv Blanc, remember the spiritual home is the Loire Valley in France, of course, so hunt out a Menetou-Salon, a Quincy, a Touraine, or the classical (but more expensive) Sancerre or Pouilly Fume. The other side of the world, Chile also are no mugs at the fine art, and produce several great examples.
