Unversa Uversa Is Interesting But Not Overly Imagi

Unversa Uversa is interesting but not overly imaginative, partly power chord space rock and electric jazz, with welcome tabla accompanied acoustic guitar interludes. JM-like fast runs impress, but the chops are more Latin than jazz here. Classical phrasings possibly betray a trained history for the highly skilled guitarist One-Worder Tim Edwards, who delivers Holdsworthian clean lines interchangeably with Manitas de Plata burning introspection, but who can also sit back in the rhythm as displayed on a slow rap not dissimilar to an out-of-breath Rob Thomas, and as companion to Bret Sexton's wonderfully serpentine eastern exploration on alto sax in the piece Nairi. Another breathy vocal and a short acoustic instrumental close an enjoyable album that flits a little uncomfortably between styles, but retains an overall magic. With Castaneda-inspired song titles, maybe it was Yaqui sorcery that they used!
