Album Review: Led Zeppelin Iv By Led Zeppelin (1971)

Led Zeppelin were a British rock band formed in 1968 by guitarist Jimmy Page who later invited singer Robert Plant, drummer John Bonham and bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones to round out the group. The band released three sequential self titled albums during 1960 and 1970 and had a big impact on the early heavy metal genre, the hard rock genre and the blues and folk genres. Between December of 1970 and March of 1971, Led Zeppelin recorded their fourth studio album, which was released on 8th November 1971. The album sold 23 million copies in the United States and more than 32 million copies worldwide.

The album starts off with "Black Dog", a great start to the album as it fuses early heavy metal and hard rock with blues. Great sexual vocals and a distorted guitar solo make this a rock classic.

Next is "Rock and Roll", a song that is as hard rocking as "Black Dog" if not more so. Bonham smashes the drums rhythmically and Page contributes a great guitar solo. This song is one of my favorites off the album.

The third track off the album is "The Battle of Evermore" a song that combines a great vocal duet between Plant and the late, great Sandy Denny with acoustic guitar and mandolin playing by Page. The lyrics relate to Lord of the Rings and together the song sounds like it was composed in the Middle Earth.

The fourth song is a rare, obscure song called "Stairway to Heaven". Enough has already been said about this song so I will just summarize. The song is the best of blues rock, folk, and hard rock and features amazing lyrics and magnificent vocals with one of the greatest guitar solos of all time to create a timeless masterpiece.

Fifth song is "Misty Mountain Hop". All that is memorable about this song is more great drumming from Bonham. This is probably my least favorite song on the album but it is still decent.

Sixth song is "Four Sticks", a middle eastern sounding song that is catchy and versatile. I had this stuck in my head for days after I first heard it, and everyone all the band members contribute lots to this one. It is called "Four Sticks" because Bonham used four drumsticks at the same time to record his drum parts.

Next up is "Going to California", a quiet, peaceful and beautiful song with touching lyrics and soft vocals from Plant. The sound Page gets out of his acoustic guitar is pure bliss.

The final song on the album "When the Levee Breaks" is my favorite. It contains distorted guitars, hard hitting drumming and more fantastic vocals to create, yet another all-round masterpiece.

Every fan of music must own this album. If you have not heard this album, go to your local record shop and buy it immediately.

I think S-to-H is well understood, but I also think what makes this a classic is the untold story of Four Sticks, Going to California and the Battle of Evermore. Could other rock bands provide such variety and depth? Plus When the Levee Breaks is simply wonderful, as is Misty Mountain Hop.
