The Wall Of Sound Vocals Was A Refreshing Surprise
The wall of sound vocals was a refreshing surprise as "Ragged Wood" dropped at this fine venue. The lost art of backing vocals rediscovered; only credible and hair- raisingly more potent than what has been aired in recent times.
With an impeccable ear for melody and a youthful vibrance the Fleet Foxes transported the audience back to San Francisco of the late 60s and the innocent optimism of the summer of love. Could this be a re invention of a type of folk music made classic by the likes of Crosby, Stills and Nash or Simon and Garfunkel?
This was music for the sake of music, singing for the sake of singing. Baroque pop as lead vocalist Robin Pecknold pens it. Something beautiful transcending some of the dictates of pop music imagery or mass appeal. With the resounding chorus lines of "Your Protector," and the sublimely simple canon that is "White Winter Hymnal" who could fail to be enchanted by the power of the groups solid chorus-esque harmonies born out of endless practising in the Pecknold family basement.
The soft reverb reminiscent of The Mamas and The Papas breathes a warmth to the repertoire. The tight intimacy of the music combined with the Pecknold's particularly impressive solo performances of "Oliver James" and "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song." The song writing craft at it's best during "Blue Ridge Mountain" whilst the crowd pleasing, infectious chant of "Mykonos" capped of a fine evening of music.
As uplifting a show as I have seen in a long time. Their persona is cool, the real deal and intelligent. The song writing and lyrics will only improve as Pecknold matures in this, my band of 2009.
