The Mulholland Drive' Of The 2001 Film's Title Is
The Mulholland Drive' of the 2001 film's title is a long and winding road inhabited by celebrities in the Hollywood Hills high above Los Angeles California. It is a David Lynch 'masterpiece' which follows the tale of young and naive Betty Elms (Naomi Watts) arriving in Hollywood with acting aspirations who meets a beautiful older woman named Rita who is hiding in her aunts apartment, Rita has been involved in a bad car accident the night before and has amnesia. The basic plot concentrates on Betty helping Rita to get to the truth about who she is and what she is doing there as the only clues to her identity are lots of cash and a strange Blue key in her handbag. The film is peppered throughout with both positive clues and Red Herrings, there are bizarre characters popping up at every turn; and just about every genre you can think of is attempted throughout, there are elements of Horror, suspense, comedy, tragedy, pathos, erotica, it's all there. A lot of reference is also made to the falseness of the Hollywood lifestyle and the decadence and hedonism that goes with it, also there is always a sinister controlling element hiding in the background and so many sub plots that it is an incredibly difficult film to understand. It is beautifully shot and the soundtrack is very good indeed and I'm sure there is a message there somewhere but I, like I guess thousands of others before me who have watched the film just stared at the final credits and said out loud: 'what the H*** was that about!'
