Priest (dvd)
This is the story of mankind's ages-old battle against vampires, but the vampires here are different. Forget Underworld, Van Helsing, Twilight etc- these things are horrible mutations that have come straight from a Resident Evil plot. They don't fly, or change shape, or transform- they just leap around in dog-like fashion and rip people to shreds. Hence the reason I will, from here on in, refer to them as beasts.
The Priests are holy super-warriors recruited centuries ago to fight the monsters, and they are formidable fighters. However, as technology (cannons, flame-throwers etc) gave mankind the upper hand and the beasts were overcome and put into prison-like reservations, the Priests have become redundant, and disbanded.
Most of humanity lives in super-cities (rather Judge-Dredd like) ruled and protected by the Church. Some, however, live out in the wastelands- and they are being horrifically killed. When his niece (who is actually his daughter but no-one knows) is taken, Bettany (one of the Priests) wants to go after her but is forbidden by the Church- so he goes renegade.
Karl Urban (Eomer from LOTR) plays a fellow priest who is taken by the beasts and presumed dead, but he reappears later on......
Fairly good acting all round, plenty of blood and guts, some brilliant touches and interesting the, but one of those films that falls just short of the mark, as with Legion (also starred Bettany) and Solomon Kane.
Nonetheless, well worth buying on DVD
