Good Movie! A Must Watch! Im Not Usually A Fan Of
Good movie! a must watch! im not usually a fan of sci-fi type /aliens movies but this one was really interesting to watch! good storyline!
I Would Disagree With Previous Sentiments That Thi
I would disagree with previous sentiments that this is a film only for science fiction fans. I watched it recently to see what all the fuss was about and i have to say i liked it much more than i thought i would. And i'm not a science fiction fan. I have never really been a fan of the whole alien genre but i this film was sufficiently multi-layered and there are several different messages you can take away from it.
I think i liked it because it surprised me. It has it's comedy moments and there is a love story running through it, albeit in the background. I loved the way the film was shot and the fact that it was quite anti-hollywood, i.e. the main character wasn't particularly likeable and no-one had gleaming white teeth and cheesy one-liners (there were some quite cheesy moments however). I would recommend this film to anyone, those who think they wouldn't like it might be surprised.
This Is An Amazing Film. But Only If You Like Gun
THIS IS AN AMAZING FILM. But only if you like guns, aliens, sci-fi etc..., definitely more one for the boys! The premise of the film is that an alien spaceship has made its home over Johannesburg, and the aliens (or prawns as they're known), start settling in slums.
The human residents get a bit peaved by this, and try and evict them, when something bad happens to one of the guys leading the eviction. I don't want to spoil the plot, but the story that unfolds henceforth is fantastic.
The special effects are great, but the guns are really something else. If there's one bad point to it, it's that the special effects team do go about OTT with exploding humans.
There's an underlying subplot that shows that despite what people look like, we can work together to help each other. The way that the film is shot is also interesting - it's starts out being filmed a bit like a documentary, but about halfway through (and you don't even notice it) it turns into a normal film.
The whole thing is great, but certainly not one for the squeamish

In 1990, an alien ship appears above Johannesburg [South Africa]. For three months it casts its shadow on the anxious residents below who are awaiting some form of communication.
Deciding to take matters into their own hands, the government sends in soldiers to break into the ship, and its then that they make first contact with the alien life forms aboard the spaceship life forms who are extremely ill and malnourished. Suspecting that the spacecraft can't leave because of a missing part, [a small spaceship was filmed falling from the larger spacecraft - this part was never found], the government gives in to public demand to rescue the aliens and houses them in a government camp called District 9.
Twenty years later, 2010, the same population who had demanded that the aliens be saved, are demanding that they be banished to some other part of the world where none will have to see - or interact - with them. The aliens, who have turned the area they live in, District 9, into a massive slum because of over-population, have become incredibly unpopular with the residents who live nearby,

and the government, in a bid to calm the population, contracts control of the aliens to a private company, Multi-National United [MNU], who is more interested in alien technology than the aliens themselves... unfortunately for them, the technology is linked directly to the aliens' DNA, which means that none of the weapons or machinery can be used by humans.
Needing to move the aliens away from populated areas in order to restore peace in Johannesburg, but also needing to do it in a way that will not cause anger amongst the international community, MNU attempt to move the 1.8 million aliens to District 10, a new camp situated 240km from Johannesburg, however, in order to do so, they must get the aliens to sign the eviction notices which are, incidentally, illegal.
As MNU field operatives attempt to get the aliens to sign their documents, they discover weapons, bombs, a nursery with illegal alien babies [the aliens aren't allowed to reproduce], and a suspicious metal tube filled with a strange liquid.
Not knowing what to make of it, and somewhat full of himself after having been promoted to head field operative in charge of operations, Wikus Van De Merwe toys around with the strange tube, attempting to open it, and a dark liquid squirts in his face. Quickly becoming ill, Wikus's life takes a turn for the worse when he slowly begins to mutate, and scientists at MNU discover that he is now capable of using the alien technology they have been studying. Now all they need to do is dissect Wikus
'District 9', filmed much in the manner of 'Cloverfield', 'Blair Witch' and 'Paranormal Activity' using a documentary format, goes one step further by inserting interviews, news footage and comments made by the population. This style of filming is not to everyone's taste, therefore if you didn't particularly care for the above mentioned films because of the way they were filmed, you might want to pass on this one. Personally, this film just wouldn't have been as fascinating had it been filmed in the normal 'movie' fashion.
As a documentary, we are given insight into the aliens and their relationship with humans. Obviously, from the first, I expected that human nature, being what it is, would be responsible for some pretty disturbing scenes, however, I hadn't expected to actually feel disgust towards the whole of mankind! The pettiness and intolerance of some, the cruelty and depravity of others - it doesn't take long for the viewer to choose sides in this docu-film. No need to specify which side
Regardless that the aliens possess weapons, for some reason unbeknownst to me, they never use them against humans instead, they trade them for food of course, they know that the weapons can't be used by humans, which is probably why they do it, but you can't help but wonder why they haven't used their weapons to simply take what they want, after all, it's not like they've been treated kindly. Their babies are murdered, they are not fed properly, they are forced to live in filth, are not permitted to leave District 9 in order to work and make a better life for themselves in short, they are allowed to die and nothing more. There are quite a few disturbing scenes reminiscent of WWII and Germany's intolerance towards its Jewish population scenes that are incredibly thought-provoking.
Wikus, the main character, who does not share the human population's hatred of the aliens, is not, however, much kinder towards them. His callousness mixed with joviality is more than just a little disturbing when he orders the alien nursery to be destroyed and laughs at the sound the babies make as they burst in the fire, telling the cameras, laughingly, that it sounds like popcorn, or when he threatens to take one of the aliens' children if they don't sign the illegal eviction notice he may not hate the aliens outright, but it is quite evident in his behaviour that he considers them inferior to even the basest of earth's creatures. When Wikus is contaminated by the alien liquid, how appropriate it is that he should be the victim - that he should be hunted down by humans wanting to dissect him - how appropriate that he should be given a taste of his own medicine. True, Wikus was never outwardly hateful, but he was guilty of being ignorant and that, in my books, was an even worse crime.
'District 9' possesses some nifty camera-work, interesting dialogue, some really good make-up and special-effects, and although none of the actors are actually well-known, they have managed, as a whole, to make this film entirely believable as a documentary.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie [although the first few minutes were a bit slow], and am soooooo looking forward to 'District 10'!
I Rarely Give Full Marks For Movies That I Go And
I rarely give full marks for movies that I go and see, but District 9 is an exception. I went to see this movie recently, and haven't stopped thinking about it!
Yes it is another human vs. alien movie, but with a difference. You get drawn into the story right from the off, and you really get thinking about how we treat different people/species!
The special effects are amazing, and the acting is pretty good too. I heard that the lead actor (Sharlto Copley) had never acted before! I'm looking forward to see what he acts in next.
The length of the movie was perfect. Not too long, and I never felt the story was being "dragged out".
This is really one of those movies you have to go and see. I'd happily go and see it again for the second time.
District 9 Is An Amazing Film From First Time Dire
District 9 is an amazing film from first time director Neill Blomkamp. Having previously impressed with his short Halo teaser films this is better than I had expected.
The story of an alien refugee camp of slums (District 9) in Johannesburg where aliens have lived for over 20 years is a great turn on a tired alien versus man theme. I can't really say too much about the film without spoiling it but the visual effects (including some impressive weapons) combined with a story that really drags you in is well worth a trip to the cinema.
What it says about how we treat others that are different to us is scary but unfortunately true.
A truly stunning Science fiction film.
For All You Sci Fi Buffs District 9 Has It All.
For all you sci fi buffs District 9 has it all.
The film is based around south africa and the city of johannasburg.
Aliens came to earth 20 years ago and over the years have become a burden on humans, to the point they are not wanted here,
The title of the film is based on the slum town to which the aliens are housed, district 9.
Not going to spoil the film for you but.....
1, fantastic special effects
2, great dark humour.
3. everything a sci fi film needs, aliens, weapons, and spaceships.
4. a great story and script.
5. keeps you gripped from start to finish.
The whole film is done in the form of a documentry
This is a must see film even if you dont like sci fi.
