Really Good Film
If you like historic films you should definitely watch this one.
The Conspirator is based on the story of Mary Surratt, the only woman charged with the assassination of President Lincoln and the first woman to be executed by the US government.
After the assassination of President Lincoln seven men and one woman are arrested and charged with conspiring to kill the President, Vice President and Secretary of State. The only woman that was charged, Mary Surratt (Robin Wright) owns a guest house where young men met and planned attacks on the President. In front of a military tribunal Mary Surratt is defended by Frederick Aiken (McAvoy), a young lawyer who took part in the Civil War. At first he believes she is guilty, but during the trial he discovers evidence that prove Mary’s innocence. It turns out that she is used as a hostage in order to capture her son, John Surratt, the only conspirator who managed to escape.
It is a great story of lies, intrigues and revenge. Very sad ending, but great performance from McAvoy and Wright.
