17th Century Soldier/pirate/mass Killer And Disinh
17th Century soldier/pirate/mass killer and disinherited heir comes face to face with the Devil's reaper, and realises his soul is bound for Hell. He escapes, swears that he will never kill again, and returns home to the West Country. Unfortunately, the whole region has been taken over by a really, really evil sorceror and his equally evil henchmen. So, keep his pacifist vow, or take up the sword once more to fight evil (and risk going to Hell)?
Purefoy is good as Kane, although half the time he looks like Aragorn from LOTR and the other half you think you're watching Van Helsing.
What part does the Witch play? Why do we never learn the significance of the mark she impresses upon the Puritan's daughter? Undeveloped themes and a couple of co-incidences too many make this a reasonable film, which is a shame because with a bit more thought it could have been a great film.
I Had Hoped To See Solomon Kane In The Cinema But
I had hoped to see Solomon Kane in the cinema but it seemed that it was only on for a week or so and we missed it. So once it came out on DVD I added it to my Lovefilm list.
James Purefoy (Resident Evil, A Knight's Tale and Rome) plays Solomon Kane, a comic character from the writer of Conan, Robert E. Howard. A strong willed puritan privateer who once fought against the Spanish and is now battling to keep from straying from the path of non-violence.
The stunning scenery and atmosphere are brilliantly crafted by director Michael J. bassett and Purefoy gives us a very believable Kane. The mixture of faith, fantasy and history create a realistic setting for this tale of redemption for Kane and you can sense that this film is meant to be part of a series which I hope will spawn at least a follow up. I really enjoyed the film my one downside is the special effects at the end. They left me feeling like I was watching a cut scene for the end of a game. Not horrendous but it jarred a little with the rest of the film.
