The Seagul Is At The Heart Of A Large Middle Class
The Seagul is at the heart of a large middle class (ageing) estate and should have a captive audience. The previous various owners have been trying to make a go of it but having visited last weekend I've got to say never again.
The place was dirty and the decor is ludicrously old fashioned. THe last owner put up a few paintaings and at least it was clean but it's obviously on its knees.
Still we walked in to a welcome sight - a huge portion of battered fish and chips, piping hot, floated towards us in the barman's hand and was plonked down on an empty table. Confused we went to the bar, deciding that we'd go for the same without looking at the menu (this is a sea side town afterall) to be told they'd stopped service. There were around a dozen other tables occupied (mostly finishing their meals) and there was chatter coming from the kitchen. It wasn't as if the place was empty?!
I asked them when they stopped serving and was told "about three minutes ago !?!?" it was 1:50pm! THREE MINUTES?!? We were then told (speechless at this point) that drinks might take a while as he was going to have his lunch...
We laughed and headed to the beach with fish n chips in paper from a takeaway. Cheaper and much more fun. Will never return. Hope you enjoyed your chips because as far as this customer is concerned - you've had them!
