We Had High Hopes For A Night To Remember For Our
We had high hopes for a night to remember for our last night staying on Mull at the Lochinvar. Unfortunately, it proved to be memorable for all the wrong reasons; a complete disappointment, providing one of the worst dining experiences of our lives.
The menu offers primarily seafood dishes, specialises in lobster (£28.95 but unavailable), but also lists several meat options and two vegetarian choices.
Soup of the day, 'cream of asparagus' was bland (doubtless reconstituted) accompanied by 'locally baked speciality bread' which looked suspiciously like it originated from a mass-produced sliced loaf. My partner's fishcake, however was satisfactory, probably homemade and cooked nicely.
Main course was a disaster. My 'roasted vegetables in puff pastry tart' served with a side salad was greatly disappointing. Whilst the vegetables were ok, the puff pastry base was dry, crumbly and tasteless, served on a cold plate (£12.95). The salad was inedible and inadequately washed being unpalatably gritty. My partner had ordered linguine pasta with scallops but the dish that appeared was mussels! That was replaced in around 5 minutes with the correct dish but the speed it appeared in meant that it was delivered at the expense of actually cooking the seafood, most of it being raw in the centre. This was highlighted to the serving staff (dressed in jeans and trainers) who simply said she would pass the comments to the kitchen. A reduction of just £3 was made to the bill.
Desserts were refused and complaints regarding the quality of the food made. The bill for this culinary masterpiece (including three glasses of house wine and a glass of mineral water)? £49.
Laughable. Many options, including one of the two vegetarian options were 'unavailable' - evidently the kitchen did not have the prowess to offer an alternative.
This establishment obviously survives on passing tourist trade who are only likely to ever visit once. Don't let them get away with it anymore, you have been warned!!
