Disappointment At The Barns, Kingsbarns
We recently visited Crail for their Festival 2013 and decided to have a meal at The Barns in Kingsbarns.
The meal ordered was, in our opinion, well below the standard expected and we decided to email/write to them to outline our displeasure.
To date they have not responded to our letter/email, so we now submit a copy of our email as a warning to others.
Email is --------
Sirs,
On Saturday 27th July 2013, (at about 18:00hrs) Sadie and I decided to dine at your establishment as part of her Birthday celebrations.
On arrival we were welcomed, quite professionally and jovially, by a young lady whom we later found to have been in charge of the Bar at that particular time.
She delivered our drinks and provided us with menus, relative to the evenings offerings, in a very professional yet jovial manner.
The menu proved interesting, but somewhat limited in choice, so we both decided to cut our losses and settle for the Haddock, Chips and salad.
Our order was subsequently taken, quite efficiently, by a young man (not the one with a cap and a quite unsuitable, for a restaurant, pony-tail) and he duly, and very professionally, showed us to our table. (Table 4)
So far so good, but then it all fell apart ---------
Although the meal was presented in a reasonably aesthetically pleasing way, the content was found to be very sadly lacking.
Had we been told that the fish was a leftover from the lunch-time serving, and had just been re-heated, we would not have been surprised.
However, as neither of us believe that your establishment would ever make such a serving, we were very surprised that, despite being your first customers of the evening to request this menu choice, we were presented with an obviously overcooked and dried out, tasteless piece of fish.
The chips, which were of about the correct portion size, lacked flavour, crispness and vitality, and actually looked quite sad on the plate.
Why did we not complain at the time?
Simple ------ We did ------ However, the only person present in the actual restaurant part of the building, at that time, was a relatively young lady who, (despite being a waitress) it has to be said, did not appear to have much idea as to what day it was or to which meals we were referring, no wonder our complaint never went were it may just have done some good ------- THE CHEF, so hence this email.
According to your website you are a family run hotel and, as competition from other sources increases, we imagine that you would wish to be informed of any customer criticism/comments, and therefore submit this email accordingly.
Ian & Sadie
Receipt refers to Table 4, with a sub-total of £26.40, but is undated and has no time stamp on it so no additional definitive details can be provided

I Thought That I Would Write A Review To Let Peopl
I thought that I would write a review to let people know that the bad reviews back in 2009 were from the previous owner. While I stayed at the hotel I found out it had previously been a large company who owned it and did not do a good job, but now it is a lovely family run hotel. My Husband and I had a fantastic time here and the food is amazing clearly fresh good quality produce. You must try it. And the rooms are modern high standard rooms (4*+) with a great choice for breakfast. It has a lovely cosy scottish feel and all the locals in the bar were very friendly. The open fire was such a treat for me as I sat for hours in front of it reading.

Two friends were up last weekend (20/2/2011) and we decided to have lunch in the Barns - Sunday roast all round and it was excellent. Pub has a great atmosphere, staff are friendly and prices reasonable. Can't ask for more.

Great Food Great Real Friendly People. My Partner
great food great real friendly people. my partner and i are just back from staying overnight in a warm friendly very well looked after inn/bb. The Barns at Kingsbarns what a wonderfull time we had that i thought i must put a review on for the benefit of others.i can only say that the poor reviews of earlier are nothing like the great time we had. the food (22oz t bone) i had was amazing.my partners fresh smoked salmon was also perfect. the rooms are very well decorated and spacious with well stocked tea/coffee facilities and a fridge in the room .the breakfast in the morning was great with a choice of bran flakes to frosties then lots of warm toast and a selection of jams and marmalades (even lemon marmalade i never knew existed)
then a large platter of bacon, eggs, mushroom, sausage both links and lorne(square)black pudding and haggis served at a time of our choosing (1030 am)
With only 4 rooms (i think) everything felt personal and special .and for making us ordinary folks feel this good on a valentines break i give them 10 out of 10 .

Having Heard Many Wonderful Things From Friends Of
Having heard many wonderful things from friends of mine that visited The Barns while on holiday in 2006, I had to try it. Let me just say don't waste your time or your money. I was so very disappointed. While the village was quaint and lovely, the staff were less than friendly, it was dirty and smelled like stale beer and cigaretes. Thankfully, we were not booked to stay as we could not. Come to find out, this place has changed hands numerous times and it is obvious the new owners do not take the same care or pay anything close to attention to detail.

I thought the staff at the barns at kingbarns were very friendly, courteous. and informal.
The food was quite good although I wouldn't say star quality or taste.
The surroundings were excellent.
The price was average for a pub meal, although these surroundings were much better than a pub.

Pleasant Attitudes - Just Very Unsuitable Conversa
Pleasant attitudes - just very unsuitable conversation!
We had noticed the pub on our way to Crail from St Andrews and thought it looked lovely from the outside - quality umbrellas and tables outside etc added to the image. The food was such a let down. We had hoped for some wonderful Scottish home cooking - Arbroath smokies, maybe some good broth and stews. Good honest food. The menu seemed very uninteresting to us, very limited and too expensive. We were happy to pay, but you expect quality....we felt we didn't get it.
The door to the kitchens squeaked loudly and at length every time the door was opened. Sadly this was every 5 minutes as the storeroom/larder appears to have been located at the other end of the restaurant to the kitchens! Why?! My husband did mention the door to an employee, who said that it had only been oiled 3 weeks earlier...my husband suggested it needs doing daily as it is SO irritating to customers. On the whole HUGELY disappointed...we left feeling like we had been ripped off and frustrated that the pub looks so great - all the ingredients are there for it to work - but we felt the poor food means it is being let down badly.
