The New Angel

OK food but service more than inept. Asked for food choice before wine selection. Of the bottles of white and red, red was offered first. Food arrived before the wine. White arrived wrong choice and had to be changed Glass of red wine went over the table by waiter. Later glass of water. When asked for wine on the table as service non existant, another table's white wine appeared. Gave up on dessert or coffee and went home. Having given this restaurant a wide birth since the arrogant Mr. Burton Race still will not be back. Pity as prime position in Dartmouth.

we went there for dinner this evening booking at quite short notice and had a fab nite.antonio and john made us so welcome and the food cooked by nathan thomas was sublime..many compliments to him and his team..the whole experience was wonderful-nothing was too much trouble -even though we were strangers we left as friends..and i really recommend the deserts.though hubby loved the cheese as much.. see you again lou and steve brooks x x x

New Angel, Dartmouth. I was apprehensive about our visit for my mother's 70th birthday, having read some of the earlier negative reviews on this site. We went for lunch on 29 May 2010 and found it a very pleasant experience. 2 Course lunch £19.50 I think is a reasonable price for a special occasion. Pleasant welcome, nibbles on the table on arrival, very attentive staff, frequent bread top-ups, extra taster dish of onion soup, petit fours at the end - all of this was included in the £19.50 per head. Decor was unremarkable, clean surroundings with linen tablecoths and napkins. If you're after value for money there are numerous bakery shops offering pasties in Dartmouth but we felt we had a positive experience that was worth paying more than we usually do. Everyone left feeling full.

Had a pleasant meal at The New Angel Fri 26 March 2010. We had four different starters and main courses plus a complimentary taster. Excellent food and service but you do pay for it! Disappointed to see John Burton Race outside having a cigarette when we left....particularly after quitting on TV show in January.

Appalling service, average food, bad atmosphere and very expensive. What should have been a lovely New Years Eve was totally ruined.

We stayed at The New Angel for our 10th anniversary in July 2008. We stayed at the New Angel rooms and the room was lovely and spotlessly clean however a shower would have been appreciated, there was only a bath. The food at the New Angel is great however I have had as good in other places for less money. Another downside which really dissapointed my husband is that he had pre-arranged with the New Angel for flowers and champagne to be left in the room for me - this was not in the room on arrival and never materialised which I think was very bad service. Also the directions to the rooms seemed unclear and inaccurate causing us to walk around Dartmouth for half an hour with our bags before finally having to ring the restaurant and be told to go there for our key! This aspect of our stay very disorganised.

Great food, go for lunch. Restaurant - very good service, food also excellent but you pay for what you get.

Hotel - don't bother, choose another if you are staying.

Would I eat there again?...No, or only if someone else were footing the bill.

Equally good food on offer for less at hundreds of other places.

Would I stay in the New Angel rooms again? No!

Yippee! We have just booked to go back to The New Angel on our 2008 trip to Dartmouth - only 3 weeks to wait!

Brilliant. Went last weekend. I'm lucky to have eaten in a few of the 'great' places in the UK and the The New Angel, Dartmouth, Devon is one of the best.
