Rose and Crown Great Waltham, Chelmsford

I have used this pub several times recently but had a bad experience there last week.

I asked for a pint of Doom Bar and, when I saw it and tasted it, I rejected it. It was off !

I was offered another one which was equally as bad.

The young barmaid then offered me an alternative and I chose the only other decent beer, IPA.

I made reference to the fact that IPA was cheaper, but my comments were ignored. No apology was offered, nor a refund.

When another customer (a regular) complained about the taste, I expected some form of acknowledgement concerning my observations, but no, it was not to be.

When I left, I said goodnight but was ignored.

It's a shame that this is a great village pub, let down by a rude young lady.

We enjoyed lunch at the Rose & Crown Great Waltham on three occasions in the latter part of 2012. It was all very nice and we particularly enjoyed Sunday lunch with its choice of local sourced meats, beef from the Easter's and pork from Writtle College. It was very tasty and good value to add a starter and/or dessert.

We'll be back in 2013!

my boyfriend and i went here on a sunday because had been told it was nice, but my god we must have got the names of the pubs mixed up because this was far from it.First of all the woman behind the bar im guessing was the landlady seemed very rude and uninterested in us, myself especially when she asked if we wanted to sit in the bar or the restaurant and i replied restaurant she seemed quite unhappy for some reason. We sat down and when taking our order she asked my boyfriend what drink he would like and if he wanted ice and then she turned around to me without saying anything and i asked for an orange and she didnt say anything just walked off which meant i got no ice or any politeness. Again when she came back and took our order she asked my boyfriend what he would like with his dinner but again not myself. A waitress came out with horseradish sauce and the teaspoon was crusty with dirt and so had my dinner mat. The food was ok not anything great. We had finished our meal and the landlady went to a table behind us and completly ignored the fact we were finished eating and my glass was empty, we sat there for a further ten mins with no one coming to the table to clear us or ask if we wanted dessert or more drinks so got up to pay at the bar because obviously no one was going to come to us and again there was no one at the bar so we had to wait over 5 minutes for the land lady to come out of the kitchen. The worst thng is the pub wasnt even busy they had three tables so cant even blame anything on them being stressed.I have never complained about any pub or restaurant before but was so bad i had to. Will DEFINITILY never eat there again.

What a fantastic friendly place. The mutton casserole with dumplings is amazing. You have to try it.

Rose and Crown in Great Waltham is a fantastic old fashioned pub the landlord is a proper gent and all the staff ere lovely (not robots like in so many pubs).

Very friendly staff at the Rose and Crown. The owner talks to all his customers. Relaxed atmosphere.Good menu with game when in season. ps the ale selection is good.

Lively village pub that seeks to please customers. Rose and Crown Great Waltham, Chelmsford is very popular with 'horsey' fraternity-landlord has passion for things equine;particularly horse racing (arranges race days).

Young chefs try to introduce international variations to menu which is good 'pub grub'. Average main course is around £8.
