Joanna Russ, The Female Man

I'd like to tell you what the book is about, but I can't. It seems to be about three women whose names all begin with J. One is called "Joanna" and she's the "narrator" but I don't think it's really the author. Anyway, turns out these three women might all be the same one at different points in time, or perhaps in parallel universes. I'm not sure where the female man bit comes in. There is a part of Whileaway (the alternative name for Earth) that has men who appear to have been castrated at an early age and made into pretend women for the men to marry but it's never explained why. If anyone else has read it and has any idea what's going on, please let me know!
