With 'the Barbarian Way: Unleash The Untamed Faith
With 'The Barbarian Way: Unleash the Untamed Faith Within' Erwin McManus really carries on the great tone he set in previous books. Right from the start this book challenges you to think outside the Christian box ,we all are guilty of putting ourselves in. This book really returns to the roots of Christianity, not as an organised religion but as a movement of people: 'barbarians'.
The title explains itself when McManus speaks about John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus. In no time he shows the reader what the Bible actually says about this man. He wore clothes made out of camel skin, lived out in the wilderness and told the people very straight. In other words he didn't have a dot collar and took a rather political stance on any issue that came to his attention. Right at the heart of the gospel and right within the personality and actions of Jesus himself, we see a complete new approach to life itself.
Don't worry, the book doesn't call you to throw away all your clothes and start sleeping rough. It does however blow your mind at times at how wrong we can all get it sometimes when we talk about following Jesus. But it doesn't simply slate 'modern Christianity', it also gives us sound Biblical advice on how to return to our Barbarian roots. These roots, according to McManus, consist of love, intimacy, sacrifice and passion.
I don't want this review to just give you some info, I really want this review to make you curious. I've seen Erwin speak live at the Global Leadership Summit 3 years ago and the energy and enthusiasm that jump of the stage when he speaks, also jump at you through the pages. It's a great read and i think essential for anyone who truly wants to follow Jesus. So go on: go buy or borrow it, but whatever you do: make sure you read this! You won't regret it!
