I Enjoyed Reading This Book. It Gave A First Hand
I enjoyed reading this book. It gave a first hand point of view from a guy that lived it. I liked Ed's descriptions of the areas he was in, what he felt, what he felt the "bad guys" were thinking and how he described the other characters that he was running with. True or not true, (I think he was writing from his memories) This was an entertaining read and I think he did a great job. I appreciate his service to our country!

I sincerely doubt the veracity of this book. It seems as though the author heard other soldiers' stories and assimilated himself into them as the protagonist.
The author seems to know very little about map reading, direction, navigation and most important of all: shooting and its many aspects. He speaks in such generalities that the impression is of a hobbyist shooter at very best - not someone whose life depended on the skills and tools for accuracy and effectiveness. The most important aspect of his day-to-day life as a Marine Sniper seemed to be the act of getting drunk.
The title hints at a real life look at being a sniper - think "One Shot One Kill" (about Carlos Hathcock) - from selection, to school to actually shooting in military situations. This guy says he basically just put his hand out, was given a Winchester Model 70 and was told to "shoot who you want." Does he really expect the reader to believe that the US Marine Corp operates this way?
I gave "Dead Center" one star, because anything less was not allowed. I can't begin to imagine Ed Kugler (or "The Kug" as he calls himself in the book) as a motivational, informational speaker.

This book is a must-read for all those interested in Snipers and certainly for all interested in Vietnam literature.

Dead Center by Ed Kugler is about a Marine who, while in Vietnam, goes from being a grunt, to being a Marine Corps sniper, and for a short period, a Force Recon sniper. This book tells of a man who helped create a sniper team independent of traviling with the regular troopers, and making a profound difference in the war. This book should be read by anyone who has ever even thought of picking up a 'Nam book.
I agree with this review because... I know one of the men that Mr. Kugler served with. In the Book, he was called Tomo. This is a book that you will read more than once. Please read the comments by the author in the back of the book first. They offer some great insight to the man who served his country with valor.
Excelent reading, I actually know one of the people in this book, in the book, he was called Tomo. He is a great Highpower rifle competitor to this very day. One day at a rifle competition, a fellow shooter showed up in full army reserve clothing. He was serving duty that weekend. His commanding officer allowed him to shoot in our rifle match that day since it was held on the military reservation where he was stationed. He stated that he was allowed off since it was his 21st B-day. Tomo spoke up and said he "spent his 21st B-day hiding in some elephant grass, we were hiding real hard too" This book is well worth the time to read. It is one that you will read many times. Read the authors comments in the back of the book first. It offers some real insight to the Author.
