In Port Gamble, single mom Lila Abbott works in the produce section of the neighborhood grocery. However, Lila has a talent that she hides from people for fear half would thinks she is crazy and the rest would demand her time. Lila is a ghost whisperer.

Lila finds Emily Ruth Griffin, the former wife of journalist Lucas Griffin, lying dead fittingly amidst lemons in the produce section. However, in death as in life she is pain in the butt at least to Lucas and now to Lila as this acrimonious spirit destroys fruits and explodes Cheez Whiz cans. Lila and Lucas join up try to learn who killed Emily Ruth as he is the prime suspect with the motive to displace her from his family's summer home while her obnoxious dog keeps searching for her amongst apples and bananas. As the wealthy journalist and the working mother struggle with a nasty ghost, they fall in love.

The antics of Emily Ruth from the afterlife make for an amusing contemporary paranormal romance as she is even more obnoxious; readers can picture Lucas naming a hemorrhoid after her. However, with Emily Ruth stealing the show, the romance between the reporter and produce worker never fully comes off except when the ghost causes havoc aimed at Lila driving the duo together. Still fans will enjoy this humorous triangular frolic between the ex-spouse the fruits and vegetable lady, and the ghost.
