Lucy McTavish and Daniel Brown have loved each other since they met as children. His family farm was her escape from her unhappy home. With Daniel, she felt needed and cared for and he swore he would always be there for her.

That promise proves impossible when Daniel dies in an accident. She leaves the countryside for London to escape her memories, but though she has a boyfriend in Alex, Lucy always dreams of her beloved Daniel. Not paying attention while crossing the street, Lucy is hit by a car; Ben Carlisle, whom she just met in the park, saves her life. Alex has no time for a broken girlfriend so he dumps her while Ben stays with her while she heals. Somehow Lucy knows Daniel kept his promise when he sent her Ben.

Mindful in some ways of the movie Heaven Can Wait, A HEARTBEAT AWAY is a fascinating, contemporary romance starring a delightful protagonist who finds surviving her beloved undesirable until she meets a guy named Ben, whom she thinks was sent by her Daniel to her. The storyline focuses on the emotions of Lucy following the tragic death of Daniel as at times she provides her inner perspective. Eleanor Jones provides a poignant character study.
