The Review
It was a point in time when lots of people smoked, drugs were hardly ever heard of, it was not dangerous to take a walk at night in most towns, living together preceding to marriage was not satisfactory and most people married before having children. The year is 1964.
Balan, sat in the lobby people watching. Dressed in a suit he felt most contented wearing, in his pocket was a gold pencil lighter. He was almost tall and almost handsome. It was one more weekend away, one more search, one more resort. Since Erika was gone Balan had been on a course he detested. All he actually hoped for was to meet one girl with whom he might fall in love with.
Three years out of college in 1952 Balan was busy looking for work as a writer, problem was, no one seemed to require a writer. He wrote scripts and he wrote his play Spring Never Returns, and that is how he met Erika. She read for a part in his play.
Rachael Sarah Dauner was born in Hungary in 1906. When she was fifteen she boarded a train on the first leg of a voyage that was to carry her to America. Nuptials, pregnancy, regret over miscarriage and at last Bernard Alan Redfield was born. From his earliest year Balan, as he was called, loved rivers.
Two generations, family, friends that linger a long time and others who stopped, shared a instant and moved on. Bereavement, living, adulthood, query regarding his manliness and his Jewishness, over and above upset, feelings of devastation and twinge are all presented on the pages of Say Uncle.
Writer Globerman keeps growing as an author. On the pages of Say Uncle he investigates Balan's consciousness so carefully that the reader is left with a finely tuned understanding of just what it is that makes him tick. Hopes, fears, understanding as well as relationships all are laid bare for the eyes of the reader in this fast paced, well written account. Balan is a multifaceted character who searches to find what he needs for himself notwithstanding the almost oppressive attachment, aspirations and desires he feels from friends and family as they at times nearly overwhelm him and his inimitable charm.
Told in the first person Say Uncle is offered from the perspective of Balan; the tale moves quickly to divulge an astute, bright man who, as we all are, is buffeted at times by the events of his life. And as most of us, he is made stronger because of his life occurrences. Characters are powerful, totally developed and credible. Balan goes through many of the ups and downs of living as are experienced by us all. His effort to ascertain his best companion is an venture most of us recognize and understand. The enthusiasm, desires and wishes Balan possesses are the ones we all face; additionally they are precisely why the book holds us in its grasp so securely. Conversations at times are hard-hitting and resolute, on the other hand verbiage used is impressively realistic.
Mesmerizing read, happy to recommend. Say Uncle is sure to interest those who enjoy general fiction well written, not for everyone some graphic sex, some graphic language. Say Uncle has a place on the personal reading list, the high school library shelf and the public library.
