I literally read this book till my eyes hurt! After recognizing the authors name on the shelf at a secondhand shop I was immediately curious about the book, the first I have read of Martina Coles work. I was drawn and swept up into this life of hard knocks and survival, at times shocked by the blatant sexual behaviors of some of the central characters. It really gave me, a New Zealand girl, an idea of what it was like to grow up in poverty stricken London in the early 20th century just as Frank McCourts Angela's Ashes has painted that for me. One thing I realized was there was a commonality between the Irish regardless where they lived in the world. Class issues, race issues, big man issues were all features of this story which spanned a lifetime of Briony Cavanagh and her family. My only regret now is that after investing the last 3 days reading this novel I will sorely miss the people I met within it. Storytelling at its finest.

Uttery Compelling And Absolutely Brillaint. M
Uttery compelling and absolutely brillaint.
Martina Cole's "Goodnight Lady" Portrays the life of Briony Cavanagh and how she rose through the ranks to become one of the most notorious faces in the East End of London.
I absolutely loved the plot, setting and the way the whole book was laid out, loving to know more of her life in more detail throughout the years, is the only bad point I could express.
I had doubts before making my purchase of this book, but them doubts where soon dissapering after reading the first few chapters.
Being a huge fan of Martina Cole, i found this as one of my favourites, and in my opinion, one of her greatest works, five out of five stars, absolutely brilliant. I recommend to any light or hardcore fan of Martina Cole.

Martina Cole, Goodnight Lady Is Simply The Best Bo
Martina Cole, Goodnight Lady is simply the best book I've read! I finished it yesterday and I'm so gutted, I just wanted it to go on and on! I've never read a book that's gripped me like this, the characters are amazing and the relationship between Briony and Tommy is so lovely!
Reading the back of the book I wouldn't have thought it would have been good and normally wouldn't have read it as it doesn't do it justice at all but I'm so glad I did now! I'll have to read more of her books if they are as good as Goodnight Lady but I can't see any being quite like this!
