Great Novel Portrays Human Character As Basically Beastly
This is a great novel that surreptitiously portrays human characters as being basically nasty, excessively ambitious betraying, and self-centered. The book makes Danny Boy show us what we really are. The human specie might mask its core obnoxious side with religion, philosophy, external piety, and the concept of holiness but we never really get far away from the blasting sperm which did in hundreds of millions of others before snugly finding the comfort zone in the female stomach.
Danny Boy grasses his own dad to gain the reputation of a future potential FACE. He then goes all out to establish himself as a person with no boundaries when his ambition is concerned. HE betrays Louie, his foundational benefactor, eliminates all human obstacles, becomes the MAJOR FACE of London's crime world, and went on and on until the people he never knew could say ENOUGH paid him back with his own coin.
Danny Boy personifies the establishment of an empire, such as Roman which obliterates all geographical and human obstacles until its friends, such as the Visigoths and Huns
say, ALL IS OVER. I enjoyed the book because it showed me what I had always suspected was the REAL MAN .

This Is The First Martina Cole Novel I Have Read,
This is the first Martina Cole novel I have read, I promise it will be the last. The author treats the reader as an idiot who is unable to remember a basic plot. She continually repeats the plot over and over again. From the 666 pages available to read you are lucky if a third of these actually advance the plot or have any new bearing on the story. I became very frustrated reading this book and if this is an example of the authors work I would not recomend her to any one.

In London, several mob thugs arrive at the Cadogen home to collect the patriarch's gambling debt. Dan knew he could not pay so he fled leaving his wife and three children to face the wrath of the mobsters. Almost fourteen year old Danny "Big Dan" Cadogen shows no fear as he faces down the gangsters wanting blood money from his vanished drunken dad. One of the crooks Louie Stein, impressed by the teen's fortitude and size, mentors him in the life of a criminal.
At fifteen, Big Dan kills a hooker with his fists and not long afterward kills someone who ratted on the mob. Over the years with his best childhood friend brainy Michael Miles at his side, Big Dan becomes the most frightening gangster in the city. He is the Face as even his wife Mary, sister of Michael, fears him. Now a notorious legend, Big Dan knows wannabes will try to knock him off his pedestal, but he welcomes all challengers wanting to die at his hands.
Though extremely well written and engaging, FACES is not an easy to read character study due to the lead protagonist consistent use of his fists and other weapons even on the innocent. The interesting story line focuses on Danny whose life of crime is based on either killing or beating the other guy or gal to retain their respect; he brings home his terrorist philosophy to his family too. Fans will enjoy this gloomy look at a despicable kingpin who the audience will hope gets his butt handed to him while wondering why he was not assassinated by a sniper with a semi.

I Totally Agree With The Previous Reviews. I Have
I totally agree with the previous reviews. I have read all her books but again I have to agree she has run out of ideas with this one and I was sick of reading it, I wanted to scream.

Very Repetitive, So Much So That I Wanted To Throw
Very repetitive, so much so that I wanted to throw it at the wall. Try others this one has lost it. Sheila Quigley is a much better writer.
From Start To Finish - As A Loyal Martina Cole Fan
From start to finish - as a loyal Martina Cole fan - i have read everything she has ever written. From about 'The Take' her writing has just gone progressively down hill to this monstrosity of a 'novel' from page one to 666 was just pure repetition, the same line rehashed. The characters were baseless so I had no empathy for them whatsoever, and the plot was non-existent. However, I read all the way to the end convinced she would at least have a fantastic finale, she didn't. I can't believe she would even put her name to this disgrace. I think she has run out of ideas, out of plots and needs to retire. There is no way she can go out gracefully after this last abomination, i will never read any of her tripe again!
