The Samsung DVD 511 is a good basic model for a first time DVD buyer, especially if you buy overseas movies via the web.
I was attracted to this model because it was region free and very affordable.i bought mine about 2 years ago and it stillgoes well.

VCD's only work if copied on a CD-RW and written at the slowest speed.
Best way to get them working is too insert the VCD then turn power off. Then press PLAY & wait. Keep doing it till one works.

Not used it but don't think you should rate a DVD PLAYER badly because of how it plays VCDs. If you review a DVD PLAYER review its compotence as a DVD PLAYER; the rest is subsidiary!!!!!!
