I Got This Player Around Christmas 2008 For A Barg
I got this player around christmas 2008 for a bargain £100. I have a sony tv so the tight integration is really convenient. You need an ethernet cable to connect to the internet, which is a little annoying, so I haven't gotten round to having a permanent connection for it, but I did the firmware update, which was simple.
As expected the image quality for a blu-ray disc is awesome and puts to dvds to shame. You definitely can't go back once you've started using blu-ray, but until there is more choice in video rental shops for blu-ray discs, I'm glad it can play dvds and cds.
The menu is intuitive and similar to the tv although the remotes for the tv and blu-ray player have some buttons that are different for the same function, which can get confusing.
I have two complaints. Firstly, the speed of starting the blu-ray player and disc is slow, although there is some quickstart functionality, which I don't use because I turn my stuff off at the wall. Secondly, if you connect the sound via analogue RCA leads, on some cd's the signal is too strong for the amplifier and it distorts. Digital sound is perfect.
Another thing I noticed is that when watching a dvd, the conversion to HD software is not as good as my tv's conversion, so I switch my signal output between blue-ray and dvd so that the blu-ray doesn't do any processing on the signal before sending to the tv. I actually enjoyed noticing this because it made me realise I had made a good choice in tv.
Other than that I am very chuffed with this player and I have had no strange behaviour.
