I got this flash a few years ago.
incredibly happy with it. I used it with a D80 nikon SLR which has some restrictions but still major functionality was great.
I used the onboard flash as a master and the speedlight as a slave that would flash offfrom behind flowerpots, walls , people. I was amazed at how much better all of my photos looked.
The only problem I have seen recently is that my batterys leaked into the flash as I left it whilst moving house for a few months. This seems to have happened to a lot of people (and is more a battery issue than with the flash).
anyway if this does happen to you, simply dab some strong white vinegar on the contacts and it will clean them up well and you will be able to use it once again.
Actually the two terms are synonimous. A diiatgl flash is simply a flash and so is a speedlight. The speedlight term is what Nikon uses for their higher powered external flashes. The word diiatgl comes into play not because the devise is diiatgl, there's no such thing as diiatgl light, but rather these devices connect to a diiatgl camera and have a regular dialogue with the camera during use. The SB-400 is a more powerful flash from Nikon than the one in the camera so if you're trying to cover more distance with your flash pictures that will help.However, before you run out to buy it, decide what the typical distance is that you are illunminate. Nikon has three flashes each one increasingly more powerful. Make sure the model you select is able to cover the distance that you need. That way you'll not be shopping for yet another flash a few months later. I hope this helps a little.
