I use this lens and an 18-70 DX on a D70. I can tell which lens had been used instantly, even on 6''x4'' prints. The prime shots are absolutely sparkling. For example, when shooting buildings, damaged bricks are a different colour with the zoom, but you can really see the flakey texture with the 1.8.
The AF is very fast - but you need a camera with it's own motor: check before buying.
Build quality is frankly poor and very lightweight, but that's why it's so inexpensive.
This might be the best £80 you ever spend - at least, that is,on photography.

Superb lens, worth every penny, a must have! Very sharp even at 1.8, great for taking close-ups, good colour tones at slower speeds even in poor light. Everyone should have one in their kit, it's a complete no brainier.

This Is A No Brainer. This Lens Will Come In Handy
This is a no brainer. This lens will come in handy in situations where light is not available. This lens captures great detail at good contrast.
When looking at my pictures of rock drawings in Norway, it was quite clear what photo's had been made with the 50/1.8 AFD, what photo's had been made with the Nikkor 18-35 and what photo's with the standard 28-80 kit lens. As a matter of fact, the kit lens photo's were (in comparison) so disappointing, that me and my gf will trade it in for a quality standard zoom, like the sigma of Tamron 24-135

This lens is dirt-cheap, very lightstrong (very bright viewfinder view) and focuses fast and secure. Do not expect a full-metal bodied lens for this money, but even if you drop this lens, the worst thing that can happen is € 75 of damage.
When taking pictures in Norway of Rock drawings, it was very clear to me which photo's were taken with this lens, which photo's were taken with the Nikkor 18-35 and which photo's with the standars 28-80 kit zoom. This is the lens that made us decide to swap the kit lens for a quality zoom.

The Nikon 50 mm AFD f/1.8 35mm SLR lens is the lighter one, the less cumbersome, and the best one.
