The Jc45 35mm Compact Camera From Jenoptic Is A Ve
The JC45 35mm compact camera from Jenoptic is a very lightweight rangefinder camera with a large-range finder-coupled zoom lens, 35...140mm. That means it has one of the fundamental flaws of all those zoom lenses, viz. a very small aperture: only f/3.9 at 35 mm, and f/10 (!) at 140 mm. That makes it virtually impossible to shoot technically good pictures at anything but optimal light. If the light is optimal, however, satisfactory shoots can be taken with that camera, the focus is good when compared to other compact cameras. --- Considering the aperture value, the otherwise reasonable flashlight (distance x aperture = 15m at 100ASA) is simply not sufficient.
I carry my JC45 whenever it is impossible to carry a real camera, e.g. to long mountain hikes when the weight of an SLR plus equipment becomes rather prohibitive. For any other serious use (apart from taking family snapshots and well-lit landscapes), I recommend not to use this camera but rather bite the bullet and carry one or two kilogrammes more of real *g* equipment.
CORRECTION: of course the JC45 does /not/ have a rangefinder but just a viewfinder plus a passive autofocus, Thus it was wrong to call it a rangefinder camera; it is a point-and-shoot one. Sorry for this.
Thanks sassolungo for the info. I THOUGHT the *g* had something to do with gravity! Like my Pentax SP2 with f1.4 (bought in 1973), a Miranda 28mm and a Sirius 60 - 300mm auto zoom.
Modern cameras are too reliant on batteries for my liking and produce no beter results than the older, although heavier, ones. I wouldn't part with any of my stuff.
My Bilora Stabilo tripod, bought in Germany in 1956 (I was in the Forces) is still in fairly constant use and shows no sign of wear. German engineering!

"Real *g*" in this case means large, heavy and of a (as far as I can see) better optical quality. In this case, a Minolta XE plus some fixed-focus lenses plus a comparatively bright flashlight.
Of course, there is still more serious equipment. But I do not have it ;-) and for the things do, the XE stuff has usually proven to be sufficient. The JC45 has not. ;-)
