I Ended Up Going To Greece Three Times This Year A
I ended up going to Greece three times this year and as I had never been before I wanted to get some language pointers so I could do some basic communicating in the native tongue (even though everyone there seemed to speak fluent English). I downloaded two Greek audio apps this one which cost a couple of ponds and another which was free.
I immediately ditch the free version because it was terrible but hung on to this and listened to it on the plane on the way over to Athens. It's from the Lonely Planet people so you can imagine it was quite well put together.
The app is broken up into different situations such as greetings, food and drink and accommodation and gives you about 15-20 phrases in each. It displays the phrases in English and Greek and you can touch each phrase to to here a native Greek speaker say what you are seeing.
I learnt about 20 or so of the most useful phrases on the way over and the results were people were really nice when you tried but I do have a couple of complaints about it:
1. The quality of the audio pronunciation is not great. The guy on it speaks way too fast and the emphasis sometimes seems to be on the wrong syllables. One guy didn't understand what I was trying to say to him so I played him the phrase and he said it sounded wrong and thought me how to say it correctly.
2. The other is that they leave out some very basic works like 'I' 'and' 'with' etc which would have helped me construct more phrases using the words I learnt in the app.
