I Chose The Xerox Phaser 8200n Printer By Review (
I chose the Xerox Phaser 8200N Printer by review (usually excellent) and example of print quality (brilliant). Advertising brochures stated low ecological cost with low consumable waste through use of wax ink blocks.
Set up and initial use both excellent no problems. However due to domestic power supply being trip sensitive I had a few experiences (about 10 over a year) where power to the printer was cut. Each time the power is interrupted the printer dumps the hot wax held ready for printing. Hence cost about £500 in ink for 4500 sheets.
As the printer has to be on all the time to prevent the above it uses a lot of electricity 24/7, so what you gain in less toner waste, fuser oil etc you more than pay for in power. These did not feature in the brochures.
Worst bit however is after 17 months and 4500 sheets the printer totally failed, Xerox Help eventually came to the conclusion that it was a mechanical failure, requiring an engineer. Minimum call out charge £250, and no you can't take it to them.
So if you need a very expensive to run printer, or you are sizable PLC, and think 17 months is fair use, then 8200 is for you.
I purchased a Xeros Phaser 8400 and had an almost identical experience. Print quality at first is top notch, but small print quality problems required several hunderd Euros in solid ink to be wasted trying to fix the problem.
