I Um'ed And Ar'ed About A Monitor For Ages... To G
I um'ed and ar'ed about a monitor for ages... to go with my new Apple G5.
After much searching/calling, I settled for a Formac Gallery 2010 Platinum (grey surround).
It is a very stylish beast. It has a marvellous clarity and colour rendition, my colleage and I opened some hires retouched files, that had been done on a Barco system, when you looked at the shadow areas, the files were bad, we'd scrutinised but had never seen these on our convential CRT displays before.
The resolution 1600x1200 is a great size, type is just the right size, personally I wouldn't want to change to a higher or lower setting, if you do, the picture goes slightly fuzzy (if you know what I mean, I think this happens on all TFT displays).
I look at the apple version, but the contrast isn't very good compared to this baby, I have 1 dead pixel, which is magenta in colour, out of nearly 2 million, I think this is acceptable, if you have 2 or more, formac will send you another display! I don't think any other TFT display manufacturer will match this.
I have recommended this to a colleage who bought 2 screens, 1 of which had a cluster of bad pixels, which was sent back to Formac, they then sent another, and they paid for the cost of the courier to take it back & deliver the new one. Very good service.
I have a G5 1.8DP, which connects through the DVI connector (will work on PC also), you can get an adapter for around £20 which will work on ADC connector if you have an older mac, (check the spec at www.apple.com G4 quicksilvers have ADC).
Great monitor, very fast redraw, no ghosting, great clarity, once you use it, you won't believe how bad your CRT display is!!

I've just returned my second faulty external hard disk to Formac. I say 'just' but it was actually 4 weeks ago and I have yet to receive an acknowledgment, so it's fair to say that their customer service has not improved as far as I am concerned.
Hi dave
No I'm not in the US, I'm here in blighty, and obviously things have changed, for the worse by the sounds of it.
I stick by what I said, the quality of their screens is very good. So good in fact I bought three of these screens, back then they cost around £650 each.
One screen stopped working properly, forget the exact reason, but it was sent off, and returned in a week, in fact the return was a new one, so I had no grumbles.
I also noticed that you are commenting on a 19" screen and not the one I reviewed, perhaps you have been unlucky?
It is a shame that a company that creates such good quality is letting it slip down then pan (by the sound of it).
LCD prices have come down a lot and as you mentioned the likes of Apple (and others) have now caught up in terms of quality and price.
Formac need to try harder when it comes to customer service, as like yourself, others will start to look elsewhere.
Sorry to hear you've had problems.

Wilse, I've got a problem with your Formac Gallery 2010 review. Formac monitors are great, until they go wrong. You say that if you found a dead pixel they would send you a new one, I think this is where your problems would just be starting. I don't know if you're in the States or UK, but this company has absolutely NO customer support. Perhaps things have changed for the worse at Formac since you did your review, but the internet is littered with tales of poor service from this German based company. Check out my Formac review at www.reviewcentre.com/reviews144804.html and see what you think. Yes, Apple monitors can be expensive, but buy a reasonably priced Samsung one instead of Formac in case it goes wrong on you!
