The Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 hard drive does not work with common USB chipsets!
Quote from tech support: "The PS 3100 is not compatible with the Intel 82801 chipset. If you recognize this chipset model you will either have to replace the drive with another model (any other model of Maxtor drive will work) or you can install a USB 2.0 PCI adapter card, and that will circumvent the chipset."
As The Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 Hard Drive Is
As the Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 hard drive is found not to be compatible with the Intel(R) 82801EB chipset, it results in a message saying unknown device, and fails to upload the necessary drivers from the internet as most USB devices do. No disk was included with this hard drive, and therefore the hard drive is useless, as it cannot function on such a computer with this chipset!
