Recording Expectations Not What I Expected
I bought a new Sony DVD recorder thinking it had features similar to another brand a friend of mine had. Well, not true. It didn't record a few shows, so back to the directions. The directions were difficult to follow too.

This Dvd Has Big Problems. It Freezes U

It freezes up constantly - as confirmed by other reviews
It can't format 4X DVD+RW - you may be lucky once or twice but generally NO.
In short, it doesn'y come up to spec - it's a con.
I've had problems with Sony TVs and will NEVER buy Sony again.

I'v Had This Sony Dvd Freeview Rdr-gxd500 After Ge
I'v had this Sony DVD Freeview rdr-gxd500 after getting it free with my Sony Wega TV in Jan 2001. It performs well when it doesn't hang! It seems ALL Freeview boxes have an in-built non-tolerance of fluctuating Digital signals which hang up this box regularly. Even pressing the buttons too quickly can hang the freeview unit... patience is required with this as it cannot cater for multiple button presses. The whole unit has to be power cycled to get it to respond to any remote or local button commands. There seems to be no Sony software update provided to this product. The best version provided is v1.01.00

The Sony RDR GXD500 would be a good product if it didn't start to freeze, Sony don't look like they will issue a software upgrade to fix :-(

The Sony RDR GXD500 has been the 2nd Sony product that has packed in just after warranty expires. I thought that by buying a good make and paying extra would give quality. NEVER AGAIN

Not Only Does The Sony Rdr Gxd500 Constantly Freez
Not only does the Sony RDR GXD500 constantly freeze up, but it refuses to play certain disks. It has a fast view and rewind view that only works on 3 settings. Setting one is just faster than normal viewing. Setting 2 is not quite double speed. Setting 3 is 50million times faster and will show random screen shots instead of playing them in a sequence. It is impossible to see or find any part of the dvd you want to watch. I paid £500 for this brand new. To be honest it has put me off sony. Also in high quality recording mode it will only record for an hour. Pointless totally pointless. At least it should be able to record for a full 2 hours then at least you could record a whole film. For the price you are better off getting a digi recorder, the recoding process on this machine leaves a lot to be desired. So many features but what is the point if you can only record for an hour at the most. Sony are not a top quality brand and the sooner people accept this the better it will be for all those involved

Had To Be Returned Under Warranty, Took 4 Months T
Had to be returned under warranty, took 4 months to get it back,
Sony would not extend the warranty to cover the time they had it.
Since then it has been "iffy", now refuses to respond to either the remote or the front panel buttons.
I am not going to but another Sony, unlike other "quality" manufacturers they don,t seem to care...
It seems that everyone with this model has problems with the intermittent freezing. I have managed to find a bit of a work-around to this when it happens. The best thing is to press and hold the stand-by button on the front of the machine for about 20 seconds, and the machine will then firstly switch off. Then once this has happened, push the button once to start it again. Sometimes it then powers down again, sometimes it will re-boot, and then power down again. If this happens just press the power button once more,and it will start. I usually then push the on-screen TV guide button to check that its working OK. Sometimes it seems to be OK after this for a while, other times, it may freeze daily or at worst, several times a day> Its a shame because the other functionality it has is far better than many other products.

Sony: Try And Buy 2x Dvd-rw Disks. So Easy To Get
SONY: Try and buy 2x DVD-RW disks. So easy to get 4x speed (or faster) disks but the Sony RDR GXD500 dvd recorder cannot cope with them. All the fancy DVD+RW features of my old Philips DVD Recorder are NOT SUPPORTED on this machine. Consider yourselves sacked SONY, as I move to another manufacturer, taking friends and family with me to a new manufacturer of choice!
For certain features to work, one must use 2x DVD-R. However it is much easier and cheaper to get 4x DVD-R's. The fact that this machine does not recognise these (newer) 4x disks is ridiculous.
What is the problem with 2X you are not using them for recording speed are you! I have no trouble getting 2X disks, Sony make them!

I Have Waited & Waited To Move Into The World Of D
I have waited & waited to move into the world of DVD recording under the telly, but now I have, what a joy. I have a built in Freeview Sony TV, so now I can watch one Freeview station while recording the other! Great
I am so impressed with this unit, I have bought one for my parents because they will find it simple to use & better than their old VCR.
