“Never again.”

I took a Lucas C 40 dynamo there in 2007 - 8, that had worn bearings and I asked that it be overhauled. It was a spare unit that has sat in a box on a shelf, since the job was done. I wouldn’t say that the dynamo was very well presented, following it’s alleged overhaul and I planned to give a it a coat of fresh paint when it was needed. Recently the dynamo on my car failed (Supplied in 2004) and I fitted the reconditioned unit. It turned out that the reconditioned didn’t work ( It was giving no output ). It was then sent to Classic & Vintage dynamos (Along with the one off the car), who advised that the front bracket was cracked and that nothing appears to have been done to the internals, which were very dirty. I would add that prior to fitting the allegedly reconditioned unit, I enquired with Carl’s Starters & Alternators, as to the polarity of the unit. I left a few messages but received no reply (I was able to get around this matter). I seem to remember that the original transaction was a cash one and I will have to check whether I have a receipt for it. However, the guarantee will be expired by now anyway but that doesn’t alter the facts concerning the work carried out. Based on my experience, I would say poor workmanship and bad manners!

Thank you for your review, I do recall repairing the unit. I would however like to point out that I have never done reconditioned units, the options would have been either repair or new. You chose the cheaper option, which was a repair, and i do not recall you contacting me to advise me of the issues you had. I would also like to point out that I always advise all my customers to please get back in touch or call in, if they are not satisfied with any aspect of the service I provide, and I would be very happy to resole these matters rather that someone leaving a very negative review. You state that you brought the unit to me in 2007, yet you are writing this review in 2013, something which I am not quite clear why the delay.

If you read my review, you will see why the fault didn't become apparent until 2013. I would add that I was not offered a new unit in 2007 (I'd have been surprised if they were available new); there was no question of it being a cheaper option and my brief was to check and overhaul the unit so as to make it serviceable. I was not advised that the unit was unserviceable or that the front bracket was cracked.

When I left numerous messages with you, I was hoping for a response in considerably less than two years.

Unlike a alternator a dynamo has no internal regulator or rectifier , the only servicible parts are brushes and bearings, if the rotor or field coils are faulty the unit is not worth repairing. I been selling new dynamos for 21 years, you mention in your second post that new would not be available . Well you must be right I'm wrong what would I know about their availability. You asked for new bearings and new bearings is what you got, the dynamo was tested then returned to you at the extortionate cost of £22. It's then left on a shelf by you for 6 years , new bearings left that long unused will corrode. Also a dynamo not used that long will not work and need repolarizing. If I can remember you brought your mini clubman to me to have the charge rate adjusted which I did for the ridiculous fee of £0.00

Also you say nothing had been done to the dynamo but the bracket was cracked. Well did I do it or not in order to break the bracket. Or did it get broke being moved pillar to post in your damp shed for it's miserable redundant 6 years. I had a single random which said "hi, what's the polarity of a dynamo" six years later I had no idea who its from
