We have here a tale from three perspectives: a black slave on a plantation who is leading the greatest slave revolt in history and the two national leaders who oppose him. Turtledove gives us a wonderful meditation on humanity, freedom, and the meaning of justice. I believe this is the best of the three "Atlantis" books.
