“unfortunately the service is lacking”

Written on: 18/07/2011 by scottishbairn (1 review written)

This hotel is split into 3 hotels, Tulum, Akumal and Coba, they each have an upgraded section either premier or golden. The resort is massive and has lots of pools, restaurants, buffet restaurants, entertainment and is right on the beach , unless you end up in Coba ( the newest hotel) which is not on the beach. The grounds are beautiful and gardeners do a wonderful job. the hotel is on the edge of the jungle so expect various animals and Iguanas, however its the usual rule, you don't touch them and they wont touch you. There is a disco and the resort has its own shopping Hacienda and has mini trains to take you around the resort, you will use them as the resort is so big.
The unfortunate thing about this resort is that it runs on Mexican time ( slow) slow service and sometimes none at all. especially in the buffet restaurants that you have to queue to get into. Expect to get up at 7am to get a sunbed as after this you will find nothing but towels getting tans. There is a no reserve policy on the sunbeds but the staff do not enforce this. The food in the buffet restaurants looks amazing when you first arrive , however over the next few days you will notice that the food that was served at dinner the night before is served for breakfast, breakfast gets served again at lunch and lunch is served at dinner. roast potatoes, roast pork, stir fry and sushi for breakfast looks as you would expect when it's been there all night. The pool areas are noisy and because of the pool bar there are lots of drunken people in the pool with plastic cups floating past and cigarette ends in the pool. The music at the Golden part of Akumal is so loud as the dj cranks up the music all day at the pool. The snack bars are basically the usual burgers and fries that havent been cooked properly and are covered in insects with birds and the Iguanas everywhere and some people feeding them which encourages them more. yes there are notices to tell you to stop feeding them but the staff do not enforce this. The smell of cigarette smoke is everywhere inside the lobbys , snack bars and everywhere that hasn't got a door. The rooms are damp due to the humidity, however they are clean. If you are thinking of going here just be aware it is large and the service has been lost due to this.
