Hi, If You Are Looking For A Medium Range
hi,
If you are looking for a medium range budget laptops then ADVENT will be an ideal solution. I purchased a CORE 2 DUO Advent for £525. I used Advent for more than 16 months. It would have lasted longer if I had not spilled water over it. The only draw back was the weight. But you have to compromise on something if you have a limited budget.

Overall, All Things Considered I Would Give The Ad
Overall, all things considered I would give the Advent laptop 7.5 out of 10. Only really the battery that lets it down. I have heard people complain about strange noises from onboard speaker and/or head phones apparently this is due to interference from the pro-wireless card. Cant say I have had a problem with that. It was one of the last ones off the shelf so maybe they made revisions before discontinuing it.

As Has Been Mentioned In Other Reviews, The Advent
As has been mentioned in other reviews, the Advent 7014 laptop is a desktop replacement. A sticker on the bottom suggests it's made by Gericom and lists their website for support, except the model number is different, and I can't find it there.
It has a fast 2.8Ghz processor, but only runs fast when connected to the mains. It's very heavy to carry for any length of time, plus it's also quite thick compared to other notebooks, so it doesn't always fit into standard cases.
On top of that, certain parts fall off. The covers at the end of the screen hinges for example, and the surround to the DVD/CDRW combo drive. If you close the computer and attempt to lift it with one hand, the case flexes. The keyboard is cheap and nasty, and the left hand side flexes in light use and it rattles a lot.
The screen is bright and clear, but it only has a 1024x768 resolution - the best part of the whole package. The DVD drive is sensitive, and it sometimes reads and sometimes refuses. It's given up writing altogether, but I never used it for that anyway.
There are only two USB ports, so a memory card and mouse is about it. No Wifi, but 1 card slot is available to add it. I use a USB one.
The hard disk is quite slow and small at 40GB (actually 38GB), which hampers performance, but the processor and graphics adapter (NVidia) are quite fast. It will play Call Of Duty (1) for example. But only for a limited time due to its main problem...
It overheats!!
Any intensive task such as games or DVD movies etc. cause the processor to heat up. Cooling is provided by a heat exchanger positioned between two mesh covers. One is just below the screen, and one is on the underside of the machine. If you lay it flat, the cooling isn't enough so it has to be wedged at the back all the time.
Eventually it will heat up and the fans will start to get noisy; but they are not enough, and eventually the machine will reset.
The PC World Return To Base warranty is useless.

I Brought The Advent 7014 Back And Pc World Would
I brought the Advent 7014 back and PC World would not agree to let me take the hard drive home so after a conversation with management and a few weeks wait got a call to say that was fine, by the time I got back out there it was another few weeks and same thing again that manager had left there was no record of it etc etc. What a nightmare of a company, the on duty manager was useless rude and extremely unhelpful so out of desperation I just left it there to be fixed.
I rang today 7 weeks on and the said they had received it back from the suppliers broken and that they have sent it back and dunno when it will be back. On the t&c it states that if it is not fixed within 6 weeks it must be replaced the young lad on the phone knew nothing of this.
Anyway do not buy Advent if you have a chance and yes PC World suck.

I Purchased An Advent 7014 Laptop Eight Months Ago
I purchased an Advent 7014 laptop eight months ago. The power supply is dead and the pin for the power supply on the laptop is wiggling in its slot. PC World are asking £326 to fix it. Under normal circumstances it should still be subject to manufacturers warranty as it is less than a year old. I used an IBM Thinkpad for two year before purchasing the Advent and it still in good working order. Stay away from Advent laptops!!!
