Mattallen's review of Pro Camera Shop -

“Trustworthy and reliable service with fantastic prices!”

Written on: 26/11/2012 by Mattallen (1 review written)

As always, when looking to buy an expensive piece of kit I did my research to try and find the best price. Procamerashop came up with a price for a lens that was over £100 cheaper than the high street. Of course, this makes you wonder why they can offer such cheap prices, so I did some reading around. From what I can see, a lot of what Procamerashop sell are 'grey imports' i.e. goods from outside of the EU. Some people might worry that this means that you are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty - however, Procamerashop offer their own one-year warranty, which is the same as you would get from the manufacturer anyway. So when all is said and done, you are getting equipment that is substantially cheaper than the UK recommended retail price and that comes with an equal warranty. I've been really pleased with the lens that I bought from them. It was in full retail packaging and then securly packaged for shipping, which is from within the UK by the way, so you don't have any worries about paying import duties and taxes. Communication was great - they e-mailed me at every stage to let me know when the payment was cleared and when the item was shipped. It's little wonder that they have such good feedback on here. I highly recommend Procamerashop to anyone considering buying camera gear. You won't be disappointed, and you can put the money that you save towards buying some extra kit! I shall never pay high street prices again.

This is another OTT post & sounds like an advert rather than an impartial review.
procamerashop is NOT UK based (apart from telephome/office) they operate from Kowloon, Hong Kong. Please don't be fooled & don't pay by bank transfer, you'll lose what slim rights you have if there are any problems.

btw, their 1yr warranty is NOT equal to the manufacturers. Most UK bought camera items get 2 or more years warranty.
Also, a good tip is to register any items bought from outside the EU with the manufacturer to make sure they are new & also don't have forged serial numbers.

I'm sorry that you consider my review as being 'another OTT post'. I can assure you that it is genuine and not 'an advert rather than an impartial review'. I bought a camera lens from them and have been highly satisfied by their service and the fact that I saved over £100 compared to the UK high street price.

You're quite right that they're based in Hong Kong (hence the cheaper prices) but the point I was trying to make in my review is that the goods are already in the UK and so there are no import duties or tax to pay on top of the web price.

I paid for my lens using a credit card and agree with you entirely that it would be foolish to pay by bank transfer. At the end of the day common sense should prevail and anyone looking to buy online should use a credit card so as to benefit from purchase protection.

As regards warranties, the lens that I bought would only have a 1 year manufacturer's warranty, so the warranty offered by procamerashop was acceptable to me.

I also agree with your last point about registering items from outside the EU with the manufacturer - I've done this and my lens is 100% genuine and brand new.

When all is said and done, it's down to the individual whether they are prepared to take the perceived 'risk' of buying a grey import item in return for the reward of saving a considerable amount of money compared with rip-off Britain prices. For me the rewards greatly outweighed the risk.
