Braun 8585

I use three razors. Last year's model of this Braun, a triple blade rotary from the leading manufacturer of rotary razors and standard double edged disposables from the major manufacturer of razors.

OK, now, let's do some math. I get 10 great shaves from a disposable razor. I pay, on average, 40c or so for a disposable razor. That is about a nickel a shave including the shave cream. At a nickel a shave, it would take 3000 shaves before I would spend $150. Would take me over 8 years.

Now, anyone that says any electric razor shaves better than a double edged high quality blade razor (not even the expensive triple edged ones, just cheap disposables) is dreaming. The blace does a much better job and much faster. But, sometimes, they can irritate the skin, but electrics can too. I can get irritated by both, sooooo, I rotate between them, and find that reduces my skin irritation problem quite well.

I bought this Braun (last year's model) after reading the positive reviews here, and later bought a rotary razor. The basic difference is that the cheap model rotary from that major manufacturer is much quieter, shaves just as well, and cost me about 1/3 the price.

The only thing that is better in the Braun is the battery lasts longer. It is possible also, that in some cases, it gives a slightly closer shave than the rotary, but it also tends to miss spots no matter how many times I go over them. The Braun also has a problem with my beard when it is longer, like when I have two to three days growth. The rotary and disposable razor breeze through that three day bush.

The cleaning machine/charger that comes with the Braun is a joke. Yes, it cleans the razor great, but it is way oversized and you need a large space for it in your bathroom. Even then, say you have that larger space, you can pay between $5.00 and $8.00 each for the cleaning cartridges. I have found they last about a month before drying out. Add $60 to your annual cost to just clean your razor. The rotary cleans fine with a brush and the disposable razors with water.

Finally, the switch that turns on the razor is right where you hold the razor and it also locks the blade. So I am constantly locking the blade position by accident. Inexcusable design flaw in a razor this price.

Don't get me wrong. This razor shaves fine. It works best on short beards and works better than cheap razors. But for $50 you can get a better rotary razor and for $150 you can shave for over 8 years with a disposable twin blade. Does the price difference sound rational to you?

I bought this model Braun 8585 fresh new around 7 years ago and have used it every day since. It has never let me down, and it still works as well now as it did when I first bought it! Every six months, I had to replace the cutter and screen. When the screen and head are not dull, I enjoy the smoothness of the shave and the fact that it is painless.

The Braun 8585 "activator" was disappointing from day one. From the first month I only ever used the trimmer, with the cover over the shaving head, yet when it was placed in the head cleaner/charger it always insisted on a deep clean for the head ... even when it had not been used once! So very quickly the novelty wore off and I smelled a rat, because the cleaning fluid is not cheap and needs replacement often.

So , really tired of the noise and hassle of simply wanting to charge the thing, I put the pathetic cleaner unit away and started charging it straight into the wall. Of course it is not just a simple two-port plug you'd find in everything else, its a cheaply-made and complex plug into the shaver that easily comes apart inside the shaver and isn't repairable when it does come apart. They cost around $50 to replace, plus postage, and they do not last with normal careful use!

The shaver itself is a stock-standard experience. Because the head was so bulky

and difficult to get under the nose I used the trimmer only, which is part of the on/off switch. The on/off switch is impossibly sensitive, so that even in its case it turns itself on at the slightest movement. It becomes a chore to turn it off and make it stay off. Useless to travel with and of course runs the battery out every time so its really is not a 'rechargeable' shaver at all as far as I'm concerned nor something you can travel with.

I refuse to buy yet another $50 charger cable for this piece of rubbish and I'm looking for something else now. Don't buy anything Braun; my third product from them ... all gifts and all disappointments!

Personally I don't know anyone who truly loves shaving? About nine months ago I moved from a straight razor (yes, the kind from the old movies) to an electric. I purchased a Grundig and was extremely happy with it until it was liberated by the housekeeping staff the hotel of my last trip. As much as I loved that shaver, the longer I used it the more I thought of features I'd like in my next shaver.

Enter the Braun Activator 8585. The packaging is exceptional. Well padded and appropriate for an item of this price. The shaver is shrink wrapped and entombed in a hard plastic travel case. The travel case has a molded storage area for a cleaning brush for use when away from the travel station. Very nice.

The first thing I noticed about the razor is that it is not small. In fact it's at least 25% larger than my Grundig. It's also hefty. Not burdensome, but certainly has a feeling of quality. The shaver itself is a fine looking tool. Colors, and the LCD screen make it quite impressive looking. Functionally it is very nice. Position 1 allows the head to pivot, 2 locks it in place for areas like under your nose, and 3 extends the sideburn trimmer. All function with ease and work well.

The cleaning and charging station is a gray plastic and looks nice enough. It holds the unique cleaning solution cartridge as well as charges the shaver. The station also has indicators on the cleaning fluid level and the cleaning cycle for the shaver.

Performance: As I said, I loved my Grundig so I was doubting that this could shave any better. And it does not. I mean you can only get so close of a shave. What it did do was shave a three day beard in about half the time as my Grundig would shave a one. The "Activator" foil seems to really do what it sets out to, which is capture whiskers which grow in any direction. The powerful motor moed through my beard without hesitation. As close as a razor? Yes.

Now for the best part. Instead of detaching the foil and brushing out the whiskers all over my vanity, I simply placed the Shaver into the cleaning and charging station. The light on the side of the station indicated a "Normal" cleaning cycle. I pressed start and it began.

The Cleaning cycle is not quiet so if you shave at night and are a light sleeper I would not recommend you it at night. It's not louder than the shaver itself, but still not a silent process. The cleaning station pumps the cleaning solution through the head of the shaver, vibrates it out, then heats the head to dry the cutters and foil. When it's done, your razor is like brand new and smells wonderful!

Some people complain that the solution is nothing more than alcohol and fragrance and that it cost like $4 per month or something. All that is true, but if that is a big problem buy the older Sensor or a rotary that can be rinsed under a sink. For the money it's worth it. Like running Premium Gas in your Mercedes.

In summary this Shaver is simply fantastic. It's got the bells and whistles you would expect for the price and best of all it gives you an incredibly close and comfortable shave. I don't see how you can go wrong buying this shaver for yourself or even better as a gift.

September 2006: Almost a year shaving with the Braun and still have no complaints. Actually took it on a 7 day trip with me. The plastic travel case and brush worked fine. I shaved almost every day and after 7 days it still have around 20% of the charge left (probably another 2-3 shaves). When I got home I put it in the cleaning/charge station and pressed the cycle button and in the morning it was fully charged and clean as the day I first used it.

Foil and cutters still seem fine as I haven't noticed a fall-off in the quality of shave. I'll replace them when the nifty little computer on the shaver tells me to. All in all, still a great shaver.

I bought the Braun 8585 shaver for my husband,he is very picky. Well he has to be his skin is verry sensitive. Just the slightist bit of lotion, or perfumed soaps on a wash cloth before his use , and he will swell up like a turkey, no joke. This razor leaves his skin baby soft, with out razor burns or nicks. He only has to shave once a day now instead of once for work and once for play. We`are a firm believer in Braun. I have even bought my self the Braun mens personal groomer works great, but you should maybe work on making a womens one just as great

I've now had the Braun Activator 8595 for just over a month and it's the best shaver I've ever had and has cut the shaving time by half from my previous shaver so that's more zzzz's in the morning. The shaver head has a new hole pattern and the head oscillates in 4 directions to ensure it cuts hairs growing in any direction. The shaver has 2 settings for shaving and 1 for the trimmer. The first setting allows the head to pivot as you shave following the contours of your face, the second setting locks the head to enable you to shave into difficult places i.e. under the nose. The shaver comes with the clean and charge station, a cartridge of the cleaning solution and the universal connector.

Load the cartridge into the clean and charge station and connected it up, each time you connect the station it examines how much solution is in it and indicates it with a small light. When you load the shaver in to the station it checks how much cleaning is required and again indicates it with a small led light. Pressing the button at the front starts the cleaning and charging process.

When it's finished the shaver can be returned to its own case cleaned, charged and smelling of lemon.
